Lola is a Liver Chestnut Paso Fino mare. She is registered and has papers. She's 18, but certainly doesn't act like it. She likes attention and is always easy to catch. She can be fussy about picking up her hind feed but has gotten a lot better. Lola is rather fine-boned and small at 14 hands, but she has a big personality! Lola was ridden extensively as a trail and mountain horse but has not been ridden in many years due to her arthritic changes, extensive riding may not be in her best interest. She can be a sassy girl with a lot of spunk and should have a confident handler as she will take advantage of a timid beginner. Lola is not ... Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, EPM

Summer is bay, 12-year old Thoroughbred, 16.2hh She is quiet, kind and a quick learner. Summer was raced as a filly but later fell into neglectful circumstances. When Pasado's Safe Haven rescued Summer she was severely emaciated, but she has made a complete recovery and is a beautiful mare. Summer has been diagnosed with EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloenchephalitis), which causes neurologic symptoms. She has responded to treatment and was recently taken off her medication. Since horses with EPM can relapse she is being closely monitored for any sign of a relapse. So far she is back to doing some light lunging and is looking excellent. Prior ... (Read More)to her EPM diagnosis, Summer had 7 months of professional dressage training. She is eager to please and loves to work. She needs an experienced rider or confident intermediate working closely with a trainer as she is still green and needs to gain confidence. Summer has been to a couple schooling shows and out on trails and is the same in new places as she is at home. She would make a lovely dressage, trail, western pleasure horse or low level hunter. Summer is great with other horses and easy to handle on the ground. She is more than ready to find her permanent home! (Less)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Very Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Peach Pie has the sweetest personality - he's quiet, sensitive, and loves to have someone shower him with gentle, caring attention. He is a light Palomino gelding and stands about 12.1 hands high. He does get nervous sometimes due to his blindness, which can make new things challenging for him at first. Once he gets accustomed to his surroundings, he is an absolute sweetheart who just wants some individual attention and kindness. Peach Pie would do well with other horses and animals that are patient and gentle. He would also do well around calm children. He does have Cushing's disease, so he eats a low-sugar diet of soaked and rinsed ... (Read More)Timothy hay and absolutely loves getting iceberg lettuce and romaine lettuce as a treat. Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Babs is a funny girl who will get your attention with a cute, calculated 'heehaw!' She is a brown and gray donkey and stands about 13 hands high. She adapts well to new situations and loves other donkeys, although she has got along with ponies and other animals as well. Babs loves to greet guests on tour days here at the sanctuary and is very people-friendly. Babs has a little bit of that classic donkey stubbornness and will hold her own with strong-willed animals. She does have Cushing's disease, so she eats a low-sugar diet of soaked and rinsed Timothy hay and she's very happy to get iceberg lettuce and romaine lettuce as a treat. Babs ... Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

Omi is a dark bay Thoroughbred with a lovely dapple coat. She stands at 16.2 hands and is 28 years old. At one time Omi was raced, but was then retired and put into foal production, where she stayed for 15 years. In her owners' eyes, Omi outlived her usefulness and was neglected. Potentially headed for euthanization, Pasado's Safe Haven intervened and brought her to the sanctuary. Omi prefers quiet, patient people as she hasn't always been treated kindly but she is very well behaved. She has stringhalt, a neuromuscular condition affecting the hind end which can cause her to have trouble making tight turns. Omi does have extensive arthritis ... PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in Washington
Horses can make good pets in Washington if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
