![]() | Animal ID: PrincessPrincess (female)
Princess was very lethargic and had a body condition score of 1 upon arrival. We quickly brought her to the veterinarian. Her teeth were in such bad shape that she had to be power floated instead of manually floated. Upon assessment of a large lump on the side of her throat, the veterinarian informed us that she has she has melanoma (skin cancer). She has lumps throughout her body including in her mouth, on her side, under her tail, and on her throat latch. Initially we worked her onto an alfalfa diet, because she did not eat much of the coastal hay. But she exhibited signs of laminitis, causing us to immediately take her off ... (Read More)alfalfa. We were able to stop the progression of the laminitis; and, because we caught it fast enough, she was sound within a week. In order to increase her appetite and encourage her to eat the coastal, we gave her B12 injections. Due to the restrictions on her diet, as well as her age, Princess gained weight very slowly. We are happy to report she is now at an ideal weight. Princess is so calm and sweet she is a favorite of any young child that visits our rescue. She gives them an opportunity to groom, bathe, lead, and overall learn how to care for a horse easily and safely. Although we do not know how long Princess has, she is comfortable and happy at here. ![]() | Animal ID: OK Typically EZOK Typically EZ (female)
Hi, my name is OK Typically EZ. I am a 9 year old registered Appaloosa. My sire is Easy Savage and my mother is Typical Tropical (a Thoroughbred). Even though I am half Appaloosa and half Thoroughbred, I am 14.2 hands tall. When I first arrived at Hope for Horses, I was very shy around people. I've made great strides in learning to trust people. Once I learn to trust you, you can walk up to me in a pasture, pet me, halter me, and pick up my feet. I have great conformation; and with my Thoroughbred bloodlines and smaller size, I could be a great pony hunter! I could also be great for pleasure riding or even as a companion. My ... (Read More)adoption fee is $1000. PMU and Premarin stand for PREgnant MARes URINe. Premarin, once the top selling drug, is a hormone replacement therapy drug given to menopausal and osteoporosis patients. Due to modern research that finds Premarin causes cancer in humans, the demand for it is going down. About 80 percent of the PMU farms have closed. At one point there was about 45,000 mares used in this program. That means the farms that just closed down have thousands of horses they desperately want to get rid of. Many will end up in the slaughter house if we don't save them. We also have the foals from the remaining farms that we need to find homes for also. The cost to rescue them includes feeding them in Canada until shipment, purchase price, vaccinations (VEWT, Rabies, Flu/Rhino, and West Nile), deworming, border fees, transport (from Canada), and care until adopted. This is one of the many PMU horses from Canada that has been shipped to Texas for adoption. ![]() | Animal ID: CinnamonCinnamon (female)
Cinnamon is a big, solid mare who is very smart. She was acquired from a neglect situation, so she has not been worked with recently. She is hard to catch in a big pasture, but with love and reminders she should be fine. Cinnamon is still unsure of people, so she will need an adopter who has love and patience. Update Sept. 2010 - Cinnamon is at a foster home where she is worked with daily. She has made amazing progress. Cinnamon loves to be groomed, loves attention, and is very affectionate. She loves baths (even her head), and she can be clipped. She lets you clean her feet with no problems. When you put a halter on Cinnamon, it is ... (Read More)as if she is in 'neutral' waiting for you to do whatever you would like to do. We do not know if Cinnamon is broke to ride, but she accepts a saddle and a bit pretty easily. Cinnamon came from a neglect situation, so we know she hadn't had these things done to her in a long time. In spite of that, she has not been a problem for her foster parents, and she seems to want to please. Update January 2011 - We now know that Cinnamon is broke to ride. She is being ridden by her foster parents, and she is doing very well for them. Update August 2011 - Cinnamon has just come back to the rescue after having been worked with by a professional trainer, so she is now ready to go to her forever home. Cinnamon is just right for an experienced rider who wants to ride regularly and often. Cinnamon is not spooky, so she will make a great trail horse. (Less) Hope for Horses Equine Rescue, Inc. ![]() | Animal ID: AbbyAbby (female)
We acquired Abby from the Grayson County Sheriff's Office. She was a court-ordered seizure; because her owners had moved away, leaving Abby behind with no one to feed or take care of her. A neighbor was giving her water, but when the water at the property was shut off, she didn't even have water to drink. At Abby's first veterinary exam after acquiring her, we discovered that she has no upper incisors and is lacking two molars. This means she is unable to graze normally by biting the grass with her teeth. However, she can use her lips to get food into her mouth and then chew it with her remaining molars. Because of her missing ... (Read More)incisors, the vet said it was difficult to pinpoint her age, but he estimates that she is in her early twenties. Due to weeks of little to no care, it has taken a lot of extra attention and nutrition to bring Abby back to health. She is now well on her way to complete recovery. In spite of her teeth problems, Abby will not be a difficult horse to maintain. She is doing very well on a Equine Senior and coastal hay. Abby is very good-natured and easy to work with on the ground. Abby is broke to ride, but it appears that she has not been ridden in a long time. She knows the basics, but needs a 'refresher' course to get her back in shape. Even though it is estimated that Abby is in her early 20s, she does not act it. She has plenty of energy and likes to be busy. Abby will make a good kids' horse after some fine tuning. (Less) Hope for Horses Equine Rescue, Inc. Collin County Blue Ridge, TX MAP IT!

| PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in Texas | |||||||||
Horses can make good pets in Texas if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses. Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect. Rescue Me! - HeIpingAnimaIs in Need. | ![]() | ||||||||
