Animal ID: GSH0192Farrah (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Vaccinations Current

Farrah was donated to GSH due to injury and illness in their breeder's family. She is a large, halter-bred Quarter Horse/Paint. She is halter broke but is a little tough to catch. Farrah is very well bred, are young and sane, and beautiful - they will shine at local shows if someone puts the training into them. She is not registered but can be, and the breeder will work with us to help get her registered. Farrah suffered an injury to her left hind that has scarred and is noticable, however she does not show any lameness. We have not done much with her training, as she also had a large crack in her hoof on intake and had to be ... (Read More)aggressively trimmed which did cause soreness for a couple of weeks. Now that she's grown out and doing better, she is ready to start her training. ***Farrah is currently in medical rehab due to a recent injury on a back leg. Please contact us for more information*** (Less)

Animal ID: GSH0190Diesel (male)

Horse    Age: Foal

Compatibility: Good with Male Horses Only
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Vaccinations Current

Diesel is GSH0188 Punkin's the mini's weanling colt. He is small like her, and the same cocoa dun color. He came in much like Emmett, unhandled and scared of humans, but is learning how to trust and learning to like people. He has a lot of growing up to do but is absolutely adorable now!

Animal ID: GSH0177Butters (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Vaccinations Current

Butters is slightly aloof, but she is getting more friendly every day. She's tough to catch in a large pasture, but not bad in a small space. Once caught she has good manners, will tie nicely and has started to learn how to lunge. She's had her front feet trimmed and we're working on the backs. With someone willing to give her consistent time and training she will likely come around pretty quick. She's a lovely mover and a very typey Saddlebred mare.

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in South Dakota
Horses can make good pets in South Dakota if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
