Rescue Me ID: 14-09-26-00356Red (male)

Horse    Age: Senior

Red came to Idaho Horse Rescue in February 2013. He is over 30 years old and was abandoned by his owner. Red was left starving and neglected in a small pen before he was given to Idaho Horse Rescue. Upon arrival at IHR he was discovered to have a rotten molar which was making it difficult to eat and he had been eating a great deal of cheat grass, which had lodged itself in his mouth. Additionally, Red was full of parasites and severely malnourished. To treat the parasites, Red underwent a 5 day dewormer program and after only a week at the ranch, he showed immediate improvement. Red is not considered to be a ridable horse.

Rescue Me ID: 14-09-26-00355Paco (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

A BLM capture from Idaho's Owyhee Desert, he was first adopted by cattlemen and sold a year later with the name '2 Cents', an indication of his supposed worthless value. For the next 9 years he was sold again and again, then given away to an abusive cowboy. When it was decided he could not be easily trained, his owner adopted the use of a 2x4 piece of lumber as a means of submission. Beaten, starved and forgotten, he was rescued by IHR in 2009. Paco now enjoys a much safer and healthier home, though he needs ongoing training to continue recovering from years of abuse and neglect. Paco is not considered to be a ridable horse.

Rescue Me ID: 14-09-26-00348Jack (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Idaho Horse Rescue rescued Jack (May 2014) after he was left abandoned in Jerome ID. His previous owners moved and instead of taking jack with them they tied him to a post and left. Jack was injured and without food, but he found a way and was able to lick the snow for water and when spring came he ate the grass surrounding him. In May the Sheriff's department was contacted when a woman from Oregon was visiting her son and saw Jack. After determining Jack was abandoned, Idaho Horse Rescue was contacted and the founder Robert Bruno made the trip to rescue Jack and bring him to the ranch. He was without a name at the time but Jack seemed ... (Read More)fitting due to his large stature, Jack like 'Jack the Giant.' Jack's ankle was quite swollen at the time of rescue and it was first thought he may have broken it, upon arrival it was determined that Jack has end stage osteoarthritis of his left fetlock joint, he tore his medial collateral ligament previously and with his injuries left unattended this lead to arthritis and a loss of most of the articular cartilage in the joint. Because Jack was injured when he was abandoned his body tried to correct itself and the body laid down extra bone to stabilize his joint and reduce movement, making any movement very painful for him. Jack is getting his fetlock joint fused and a lot of rehabilitation and care at the ranch, during this process he has shown a lot of strength and been very gentle and cooperative! Jack is not considered to be a ridable horse. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in Idaho
Horses can make good pets in Idaho if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
