Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Male Horses Only
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Toby is a 9 year old Appendix QH gelding - he is 15.1 hands tall. He has overcome severe fear and trauma from abuse & neglect. He is rehabilitated from severe starvation & physical / emotional abuse. He is currently living with a pro bono trainer receiving daily foundation ground work support. Toby is improving a lot in his confidence & trust in human contact. He is not for beginners or children yet due to the fact that he very recently had significant flight bolting behavior from fear. But he is gentle with children brushing him and ties well now. Toby is barefoot & appears to be serviceably sound. He is current on all vaccines, dewormer, ... (Read More)hoof trims, sheath cleaning, & teeth float. Toby is not under saddle and will need consistent education from a professional or experienced natural horsemanship handler in order to fulfill a role as a riding horse. But he is much more confident on the ground and follows his handler nicely over tarps, through obstacles, into deep water, up a ramp into a trailer, etc. Toby is a very loyal, shy, sweet horse with a huge heart who is trying very hard to forgive and please his human handler. He demonstrates no stallion aggressive behaviors, but does show stallion interest in mares, so he is best housed with geldings. He is very low in the herd hierarchy and gets along very well with geldings, large goats, & dogs. Toby has a huge heart & lots of 'try'. He needs a home of his own with a dedicated and loving leader who has the time and financial means to support his continued training to fulfill his full potential. He is very young and has a full productive life ahead of him. Toby is available for adoption by contract through Animal Guardians Horse Rescue, Inc. - Contact us on our website for an application to be mailed to you - http://animalguardianshorserescuenetwork.webs.com - He is boarded with a pro bono trainer in Thousand Oaks, CA. Misty is bombproof on the ground, very sweet and gentle, easy to handle, loves to be groomed & bathed and doted on. She is good with children, other horses, dogs, and goats. Misty is an easy keeper, healthy, happy, and content mare. She is current on all vaccines, dewormer, teeth float, & hoof trims. Misty is full boarded in Simi Valley, and available for ... Animal ID: Kern County AC #A1020251Sabre (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Health: Gelded

LOOKING FOR THIS HORSE: He was adopted from Kern County Animal Shelter April 12, 2016. I recently learned he was adopted by a rescue but the person did not know which one or where the rescue is located. This Bay gelding with a white stripe and left front white sock is Sabre SMF, Straight Egyptian Arabian and is 9 years old. He is a papered, registered Arabian horse and he actually belongs to me. I live in the Antelope Valley, part of Los Angeles County. Sabre was living on a feed lease up in Mojave for the past couple years as a companion horse. He should not be ridden. I lost contact with him early this year, the man who had him seemed ... (Read More)to disappear, my contacts thought he had moved away. Not until June 23rd did I finally find out that this horse was confiscated in February by Kern County Animal Control along with other animals with regard to one of their cases, still active. So then I was working with Kern County and last week they told me he was adopted out in April. They said they can not tell me who adopted him or where he is. So I am looking to find him myself and make sure he is alive and well. This is very hard for me to wonder how he is. I am trying to locate him and make sure he is OK. If you have seen him or know anything about this please let me know. Thank you. I am Terri Valentine-Duarte at (661) 270-9367 or (661) 202-2881 (Less)

Tilly and her colt came to AAE in the end of June 2014 after an animal control cruelty seizure. She was in very poor, emaciated condition, and bloated, and shortly after intake, she suffered a serious case of colic. Fortunately, Tilly had an overnight stay in ICU at Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center (LBEMC) and recovered. There is no doubt this girl is a fighter with a strong will to survive. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

AAE took in this handsome TB gelding in November 2013 after relinquishment by his owner resulting from a financial distress situation. He loaded easily when we picked him up. He seemed to be an absolute gentlemen, and we were told he was an ol' trail horse. He was very thin and suffering from a respiratory infection/mild pneumonia. Smokey received a visit from Dr. Stolba, and he was placed on antibiotics while in quarantine. Smokey truly is a kind ol' soul, but he does have a few quirks that need exploring and work. Working in the round pen is not something he enjoys, and he didn't seem to have much understanding of anything but 'go'. However, he's made great progress. He readily accepted a bit/bridle, and he stood pretty quietly while saddling, with no resistance. However, as his rider's leg went up and over to mount, he bolted. Radiographs of his withers area indicated an old fractured vertebrae with a piece of bone that migrated back a couple vertebra in his shoulder area. No wonder, he was trying to escape pain. Based upon the location and saddle placement, a saddle is likely a source of substantial pain. As a result, Smokey will be best suited as a companion. He also has multiple melanomas under his tail, and a sarcoid in his inguinal area. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental care, but his hooves are still a work in progress. He manages them well, but does not do well with hoof trimming, possibly due to his shoulder issues. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please see website for current information. Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Vaccinations Current

Ruby and her colt (Gem), arrived from a NV feedlot on May 28, 2011. Ruby was very thin and in poor condition, as she was depleting herself to provide for Gem. Her teeth were in very poor condition, with large quids (clumps of partially chewed hay) falling from her mouth. With dental care, nutrition, and all the other needed attention, Ruby regained her health. While she was untouchable when she arrived, Ruby has learned to trust and can perform basic groundwork skills; however, she is very timid with humans and needs a gentle, quiet hand. She appeared to be minimally handled or unhandled, and in foal, but one of few auction/feedlot rescues that appeared in good health. She delivered Dylan on April 8, 2014. Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

Hopi is one of the 2011 November Rescue Miracle mares (Mare #11). She arrived in late March 2012 with a yearling colt, Turner, at her side. Hopi was fearful of humans, unapproachable and very reactive. She obviously had little to no handling before her arrival and possibly had a bad human experience as well. She also had a skin condition on her face, likely due to over-exposure to the sun on the non-pigmented skin around her eyes and muzzle that is common in some greys and appaloosas. We believe this skin condition made her even more sensitive to touch than she otherwise may have been and contributed to her tendency to be very head-shy. ... (Read More)Fast forwarding to 2016, Hopi is coming along nicely. While slow to trust, she has made good progress. She has spent time in two foster homes and is steadily learning to develop relationships with humans. She can be haltered and has good ground manners. At her current foster home, she is being exposed to a variety of experiences in order to boost her confidence. She regularly goes on walks in the neighborhood, exposing her to cars, dogs, and other horses, and is doing great. Additionally, her skin condition has improved and is easily managed by limiting exposure to the mid-day sun through pasture/stable management and using fly masks. Hopi is the type of mare that will develop deep bonds with her owner once she trusts her/him. She is ready for her own special person who is willing to make a long-term commitment to patience and daily attention. She will require an advanced handler with substantial experience training from the ground up. She has not been started under saddle, and she is not suitable as a child's horse at this time.     Located in Banning, CA Adoption Fee $500.00 Ahli is a 21 year old stallion, 14.3 HH. In excellent health and condition. He is still a stallion because current owner got him 3 years ago after the lady next door passed away. She did not want to geld him at that age.     This handsome guy was relinquished by his owner in January 2014 after his owner developed health issues. He shared a (dry) pasture with another horse for 12 years, and he was very protective of his pasture-mate, much to his detriment. Banjo had a very sweet side, but he also tested his handler, and displayed some naughty stud-like behavior. He was fearful of ropes, and he also challenged his handler when approached with a lead rope. We were told he was used as a child's riding horse (hard to imagine) 12 years prior. Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014 after he and his companion were abandoned by their owner and found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Not only was Magic in poor condition, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a large, dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a large ginger ... (Read More)root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good, everything was within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed, then treated with a chemo agent to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and he is gaining confidence by the day. He has a very willing spirit, and he's a ton of fun to work with. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
