Rescue Me ID: 17-07-17-00448Kiwi (female)

Horse    Age: Filly

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

Kiwi was relinquished by her owner after losing interest. She was thin, and her hooves were much overgrown. She came in with severely club hooves, fronts and hinds, and is slated for surgery (check ligament release) early 2017, after rain/mud are no longer a concern for housing and post-surgical care. Little is known about Kiwi's background, but apparently she came from an Indian reservation. She is a sweet, curious, and social filly. Hoof handling is an issue, but may stem from hoof pain or fear from past pain/abuse. Kiwi is up to date with vaccines, deworming, and hoof and dental care, and she will be available for adoption after ... (Read More)surgery and rehab. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

Shelby is a QH-type mare that came to AAE in April of 2017 when her new owners realized they did not know enough about horses provide proper care. When we arrived to pick her up, it took 2.5 hours to earn her trust and place a halter on her. Since arriving at AAE, she is learning to trust and becoming a sweet, social mare that enjoys human interaction. Hoof care is a work in progress. We are exploring her experience. She is a little nervous but willing, always trying to understand what's being asked. She's had dental care, been vaccinated and dewormed. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Looking for a home for this sweet boy. I rescued Heath 3 years ago after his owner was going to euthanize him due to pain in his front hooves. Heath is being treated with Equioxx and is scheduled to start Osophos. With these treatments he's sound. He's 16 and prior to my rescuing him he had a career for 9 years as a western pleasure horse. He's barefoot and is most comfortable booted when ridden. He does great on trails and can ride out in a side-pull or bitless bridle. He's a laid back easy going guy and would make a great horse for a child, light trail riding and arena work. Rehoming fee $950

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Gelded

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION: JOHNNY BREED: Arabian (unregistered) (papers and lineage unknown) GENDER: Gelding AGE: 12 years old HEIGHT: 14.3 HH LOCATION: Acton, California ADOPTION FEE: $650.00 It is with much regret that we are offering Johnny again for adoption. Unfortunately, the adoptive home was not a match and he is now in search of immediate placement. Being concerned with his recent behavior, we had an animal communication session done with him. He is pretty upset as to why he was moved and very hurt that his previous owner could not keep him. He wonders why he is the one nobody wants. Well...it is because he is angry, and acts out on ... (Read More)this anger. So we asked him what he wants and we are on a mission to find this for him. Johnny just wants to be a horse. He has already proven that he can do what is asked of him, but now he just wants to be a companion. He does not want to be pressured to do things, so even though he can be ridden he does not like it. He also does not like men (please no exceptions). He needs a female only owner who will go super slow with him and take the time to build the emotional bond he has never had. If you have other ideas for him, please do not inquire. While I know this may sound unreasonable to some people, I would like to be able to give this horse the freedom to choose, as we are all entitled to. I know with time he will come around and seek connection, but it may take a while. He is for a very experienced person only, no children, no families. If you have a pasture, that is a big plus for him! So what is in this for you? You get to experience the gift of giving a hurt/lost soul a new reason to live. If this sounds like you, and you are up for a challenge, please contact Saffyre Sanctuary for more information. (Less)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Vaccinations Current

Missi is a 2001 registered TB mare. She is a healthy girl updated on all vaccines, coggins, teeth are floated and wears front shoes. She is still recovering from a tendon injury (front left) so needs space/pasture to walk/stretch it for full recovery (per UC Davis Vets). She loves being around people, being groomed, inherently curious and silly. She hasn't enjoyed being ridden since we've owned her (over a year), other than being walked on a lead. I'm assuming that would change with he healing of her tendon, as she has been shown extensively by her previous owner in english/hunter/jumper, but also rides western. Loves kids! I am 9 months ... (Read More)pregnant and need to rehome (to the right home) asap. She has only known love all her life (her second owner had her from a filly until we got her) and will only go to a loving home willing to open their arms to her. She has happily lived in a herd in the past and currently boards alone in a paddock. She is great with other horses, very low-key except she charges the fence at her buddies come dinner time. I've fed her with other horses in the past and she just pins her ears and takes over whichever pile she wants...a bossy thing, but not actually aggressive. Thank you! (Less)

Bay Charm is a gorgeous 24 year old Arabian mare! Although she is not broke she has been handled and loves attention! She will make a great project for an experienced person. She gets along with other horses, and is more alfa than submissive. She has been waiting for her person, could that be YOU?! This is one horse that is part of a large group of Arabians that are in desperate need of re-homing. Their limited handling will require that adoptive owners be very experienced in re-starting these horses. They are halter broke, at some point have been trailered, and some have been ridden. Saffyre Sanctuary is the agent for these horses. ... (Read More)Prospective adopters will need to go through a screening and site inspection. Adoption Fee: $350.00 - serious inquires only! Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014 after he and his companion were abandoned by their owner and found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Not only was Magic in poor condition, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a large, dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a large ginger ... (Read More)root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good, everything was within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed, then treated with a chemo agent to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and he is gaining confidence by the day. He has a very willing spirit, and he's a ton of fun to work with. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
