Rescue Me ID: 14-09-29-00826Molly (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Good golly, Miss Molly! Molly is late teens/20ish mare who was rescued by a private party from a bad situation not once, but twice. The first time, she was rescued to save her from the threat of being shot by her owner because they wanted to move out of state. After rehabilitation, she was taken in by a new family, but six months later she was found neglected and in need of rescue again. Unbelievably, Molly was even thinner than she was the first time she was rescued. AAE took her in as her rescuer wasn't able to support another horse at the time. She has recovered nicely and has a sweet and trusting disposition even after all the trauma in ... (Read More)her life. Molly has been ridden western and handled well by a young experienced rider. She enjoys attention and grooming. Due to her sway back, a smaller light rider for light riding or a companion situation would be best or she would serve well with a leadline job. She did well when kept alone, but since being housed with the herd, she tends to bond with one horse and has some anxiety when separated. Molly really needs her own family where she will get regular loving attention. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-09-29-00810Smokey (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded

AAE took in this handsome TB gelding in November 2013 after relinquishment by his owner%A0resulting from a financial distress situation. He was very thin and suffering from a respiratory infection/mild pneumonia. After a visit from the doc, he was started on antibiotics while in quarantine. %A0He accepts his meds without too much fuss. He seems to be an absolute gentleman. %A0We were told he was an ol' trail horse, and when he's feeling better, we'll explore a little saddle work. Upon completion of his antibiotics, he will have vaccines updated, and will be scheduled for desperately needed dental and hoof care. %A0He loaded easily when ... (Read More)we picked him up. January Update: %A0Smokey is a kind ol' soul, but he's got a few quirks that need exploring and work. Some days he meets you at the gate, other days, he'd rather be alone and plays hard to get. %A0Those times are fewer and farther between, but still a part of his day. %A0Working in the round pen is not something he enjoys, and he doesn't seem to have much understanding of anything but ''go''. %A0However, he's making progress. %A0Only one attempt to mount%A0on so far. %A0He stood pretty%A0quietly while saddling, with no resistance. %A0He readily accepted a bit/bridle, but we didn't get as far as in the saddle. %A0He has an issue with anything moving over/across his back behind the saddle (as in a leg up and over). %A0So, the ol' guy needs some work, and that's where we're headed. February Update: Smokey recently got his dental work done and his second hoof trim. He's spent a little time in the round pen, and he's learning/re-learning a lot, but we haven't reintroduced a saddle yet. May Update: After radiographs, an old fractured vertebra has been discovered in Smokey's withers. This could explain his reticence to taking a rider. Further exploration will be needed to determine if riding will be in his future or if he will be the best looking pasture companion you can find for your pasture. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-09-29-00805Zara (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

AAE took in this big, beautiful girl in November 2013 after relinquishment by her owner. Zara's relinquishment resulted from a financial distress situation. She was thin and needing attention. Zara seems to be a gentle giant...not a draft, but a big, quiet, kind mare. We were told she was a pacer. She doesn't have a visible tattoo under her lip, but does have an illegible tattoo on her neck. She loaded like a champ when we picked her up. Update: Zara kicked a panel between her and Smokey a few days after arrival. She fractured her splint bone and developed a seroma that was draining. Due to ongoing draining (several weeks), AAE ... (Read More)opted to surgically repair the crushed bone and seroma. Zara is healing after surgery. February Update: Zara had some ongoing swelling and drainage after surgery; however, it finally appears to be resolving. We haven't had drainage for a week (yayyyyy!!), and swelling is finally reducing. Zara is a super mare. She stood politely in her stall for bandage changes every 2-3 days (day after day after day), and she tolerated her stall rest like a champ. However, she has a major issue walking through smaller gates/doors (like the stall door). She doesn't walk, she bulldozes through. When asked, she tries to contain herself; sometimes she does, and sometimes she doesn't seem able. She has now had her dental. We shaved the tattoo on her neck and tracked down a bit of her racing history. We discovered she is about 11 years old (not 8, as we were told). She was bred in Indiana, and raced as a pacer at Cal Expo. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Kewpie is a cute and friendly pony mare who was rescued from a NV feedlot (by another rescue) as a yearling, and taken in by AAE in Fall 2012. She is very smart and respectful under halter, but sensitive and needs more handling and socializing before moving forward. She enjoys attention and grooming and has a willing attitude. Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded

AAE took in this big, handsome guy in January 2014 after relinquishment by his owner due to health issues. He shared a (dry) pasture with Boss for 12 years. He has a very sweet side, but he's also tests his handler, and displays some naughty stud-like behavior. He seems fearful of ropes, and has challenged his handler when approached, but eventually submits to a confident handler that doesn't retreat. We were told he is a riding horse, but no idea yet what training or experience. Currently, Banjo is coming around nicely. He's softening and becoming a very social guy that enjoys attention. He appears to have issues when approached with ... (Read More)a rope, although he's responding well to patience and kindness. He gets to be a bit of a handful when excited, but is responding fairly well. At this point, he needs a patient and gentle, but firm, experienced leader. Rescue Me ID: 14-09-24-01386Magic (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Meet Magic. This sweet guy was brought into AAE late on January 24, 2014. He and his companion, Love, had been abandoned by their owner and were found by a family member. Although Magic's weight was not horrible, he had several sores all over his body, including one that his family member thought was a ruptured inguinal hernia, that he had been untreated for at least three (3) years. It was a very large sarcoid that dangled from his abdomen. Magic's blood results were generally good with everything within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and ... (Read More)the other on flank/abdominal area was a sarcoid. The remaining lesions/growths, including his ear also appear to be sarcoids. The three worst lesions need to be removed and treated with chemo to reduce the risk of recurrence. Fast forward to September, Magic has recovered from all his surgeries and with his winter coat long gone he is looking good! He has personality +, and no doubt he's going to make someone an amazing partner. He is current on vaccinations, deworming, dental and hoof care. He is currently barefoot. His friend Love has found her forever home and now it is time for Magic to find his. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Honey is a 7 year old registered Irish TB mare, off track for several years. She was being ridden in hunter-jumper shows by a 12 year old for the last 2 years. She recently suffered a soft-tissue injury to her hind stifle and needs 6 to 8 weeks more of paddock rest and hand-walking to heal. Vet says 70% of these cases with this injury heal and are rideable again, 30% are not, so there are no guarantees. Honey is 15.3 hands, stocky, and healthy/sound. But her injury renders her unable to perform in jumping shows any longer. Her owner has contacted our rescue to ask us to take her in. We are full at the time and do not have stall space, and we ... She is boarded in Simi Valley, and can stay where she is quite happily and safely, but we need sponsorship to take on this long-term rehabilitation case.     Precious is a very sweet, intelligent, curious, friendly mare. She is a Paso Fino/Arabian cross, approximately 11 years old, 14.1 hands. We obtained her from the Castaic Shelter last spring and rehabilitated her & retrained her with Mason Bay Farm. Precious loves people, comes when her name is called, and loves trying new things. She is dominant in herd situations with food, probably due to the fact that she was so badly starved before going to the Castaic Shelter. But overall, she is a lovebug. She is friendly with goats, children, dogs, and other horses. She is very willing and brave. Current on everything. Has mild club foot in front ... Otherwise, she is healthy and beautiful, happy, and ready to find her permanent loving family. Precious is available for adoption under contract by our rescue. Rescue Me ID: 14-09-05-00033Peaches N Cream (female)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Male Horses Only
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Needs Vaccinations, Arthritis

Peaches is an about 20 year old 14.3-15 hand Bay Overo Paint mare. I adopted her from Sadies Horse Rescue through a trainer working with them at the time, about 3 years ago. The people estimated her age to be around 18 then, so she could be anywhere from 18-21 years old. Peaches was abandoned at Chanslor Ranch in Bodega Bay by her previous owner who was a very rough Western Rider. He hit & kicked her & yanked her mouth out with a bit. The rescue told us she would now flip over backwards if you rode her in a bit. The rescue let her loose in one of their hilly pastures where one day she was found with a 2-3' open gash across her chest. It was ... (Read More)thought that she ran into a T-post, but no one knows for sure. She still has a huge scar across her chest. When I first started working with her she was defensive, running away, turning her rear at me to kick & bite if I came near. She soon learned to be accepting & calm. She accepted the saddle well & I only rode her in a hackamore (later a loose ring snaffle). She is actually well broke & even knows her flying lead changes. She did everything, western, english, low level dressage, she loved to jump but my main riding with her was in endurance. She was a great mare for trails but always weak in her hocks & knees. Unfortunately I never had the money to get her injected. About 2 years ago the barn owner at the facility Peaches was at had limited space. Peaches has always been in a paddock by herself or with other geldings in a pasture. The people moved her in with a herd of mares & got double barrel kicked in her knees the first night. She still has a deep scar on one knee & bandage sore scars on both front legs. After she recovered I rode her lightly & the trainer I was with at the time used her for kids lessons but her hocks got worse & she wanted to be a one person horse & hated the changes in riders on her back. Last year I moved her to a friends pasture in Sebastopol where she now lives with two other geldings. She's definitely an easy keeper. Besides bad joints she is otherwise healthy but is prone to hoof abscesses in the winter mud. On few occasions I ride her bareback at Ragle when my friend has time to take me & her horse out. I absolutely love this mare but am broke & & so busy that I don't have the time I need to dedicate to her. I would love for her to go to a private home with pasture room & shelter as a companion to a gelding. Please feel free to contact me if you know of anyone that may be suited. She needs a loving, calm yet assertive human who will not be afraid of her if she acts a little defensive. Tatjana 707-237-1904 (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-12-09-00036Goldwing & Lady Godiva (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Fearful/Anxious

Goldwing's story is one of separation, detachment, and motherly love for a disabled child. As a broodmare for most of her life, she adored and cared for her children, as best as she could. The wonderful mother she is. People would them taken away from her, every time, leaving her with an emptiness and distain people in general. Over the last year, we worked through her anxieties, trained her to be ridden, something she loves; feeling that she has a purpose and reason to exist. When her daughter Godiva needed to be re-homed, we stepped in, and Goldwing's adopter also agreed to adopt Godiva. The joy of having these two souls reunited was ... (Read More)beautiful to watch and they are now inseparable. However, the emotional healing that I thought I would see in Goldwing's eyes turned to worry and concern... Godiva, had the potential to be had been top level dressage horse, but an unknown lameness issue appeared when she was only 3 years old. Retired, she stood in a field for almost 10 years. In 2012, when the person who originally adopted her realized that her rehabilitation would be more than she could handle, Goldwing's adopter, adopted Godiva for Goldwing. With a full vet check, including x-rays, ultrasounds, you name it, she was diagnosed with navicular in left front, and very slight ringbone in the right front. We immediately started our treatment plan and within 9 months was about 90% sound. However, her new owner, being so far away, was getting impatient on her recovery progress and costs involved, and she was receiving conflicting information from other 'experts' in her area. This information made her decide to stop our treatment plan and within 5 months, she regressed back to her original lameness, if not worse. These 'experts' who never had seen this horse in person, told the adopter to have Godiva put down since they thought she had a neurological problem. I told her I would not do that to her, or Goldwing. For the last few months, when we turn Goldwing and Godiva out together, Goldwing makes Godiva move, no matter how much pain Godiva is in, and will not let her out of her sight. She knows she is hurting, and is frantic when she can't see her in the stall next to her. She is screaming inside for someone to help her baby out of this pain. Since the treatment plan is very expensive, we have been unable to do this for her on our own. We possibly have an alternative remedy for her, which is not quite as expensive, but ideally, our past treatment and the new homeopathies should be combined for a complete recovery, which could take as long as 4 years. The body will take the time it needs to heal and only the universe knows how long that is. For the past week we have had her on bute and she is moving well again, though this is just to get her past her immediate discomfort. Bute does not work on neurological issues so we know for a fact that we are dealing with sore feet.(Navicular) I made Goldwing and Godiva a soul contract that they would never again be apart, and I will keep that promise. We are ultimately looking for someone who will feel their story, and not 'use' them. (Less)

My stallion's real name is 'Omataquiasin' which is Cherokee for All My Ancestors. I call him 'Bo' for short. He will remember everything I taught him on the end of a rope with halter on. I taught him to walk, trot and canter on command and lead, back and to go in/out of the gate with me. He is very smart and needs to be in a squeeze chute to put the halter on which he will do. He was three years old when he was rounded up at West Black Rock, near Gerlach, in Humbolt, NV. The BLM has his birth year as 1994. I'm placing my black mare, 'Mama' along with Bo in hopes that he will run with her forever as they are married. She's from ... (Read More)a different herd, rounded up at Rocky Hill, near Eureka, NV also foaled in 1994. The reason she is only cooperative with hoof trimming in the squeeze chute is because of her witnessing the mexicans and a cowboy roping and choking the stallion in order to conquer him to put on a halter. I never gave the ranch where I boarded them permission to do this! She feels safer in the squeeze than in the round pen on the end of a rope. She has a very kind eye and comes up snickering at feeding time and has nuzzled her babies over to me for bonding after they were born. She's had 3 with me, not all on purpose, I didn't know about the foaling heat. I sold the youngest, Sequoia, and am keeping Raia and Naiomi. It would be wonderful to someday bring the girls to see them in their new home. It would please me to know someone may also work with them and train them to be ridden as Mama is a great jumper and Bo has a very smooth, floating trot. These two need alot of love and trust to develop with their new owner because of the cowboy incident. I can only touch the last half of Mama's body, but I can drive them anywhere, into stalls, trailer, etc. I've learned the most from Bo about body language and it's all been good here. I will ad also that at this particular adoption from Susanville (Litchfield Corrals) in Santa Rosa, I was the first to have my number drawn to pick horses. So, I got the nicest stallion, a beautiful blue roan with salt and pepper mane and tail who was a very cool mid range with all the other stallions. I also picked the nicest mare with great conformation, and also a little baby blue roan, 'Little Big Man'. He was my son's horse (the twin who wasn't in the wheelchair) and he never really got into horses like I expected so Little Man is also available as he's been ridden occasionally bareback, leads, ties, trailers and is good for the trimmer. He's a small 14 1/2 hands, about 13 years old and I think he will make a very CUTE, HANDSOME show pony for a youngster wanting to learn and school him. I'm asking $1,000. for him. He also came from Mama's herd and he's gelded. I pray for only the best for these horses as they are family...it would be a blessing to see them stay together with one people family. Any questions, please call me at (530) 620-2031. Sincerely, Susan Fulmer (Less)

Animal ID: 12-10-22-00015Bo (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed)

My stallion's real name is 'Omataquiasin' which is Cherokee for All My Ancestors. I call him 'Bo' for short. He will remember everything I taught him on the end of a rope with halter on. I taught him to walk, trot and canter on command and lead, back and to go in/out of the gate with me. He is very smart and needs to be in a squeeze chute to put the halter on for now which he will do. He was three years old when he was rounded up at West Black Rock, near Gerlach, in Humbolt, NV. The BLM has his birth year as 1994. I'm placing my black mare, 'Mama' along with Bo in hopes that he will run with her forever as they are married. ... (Read More)She's from a different herd, rounded up at Rocky Hill, near Eureka, NV also foaled in 1994. PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
