Rescue Me ID: 17-03-17-00003Easton (female)

Horse    Age: Yearling

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

This lil (ha!) filly has personality plus!!! She was abandoned at about six months and found hobbling on the streets. Easton was picked up by a local animal control who contacted AAE for placement. Easton was non-weightbearing on her right hind. Imagine the little gal, she was a stray, out alone on the country roads and probably had not felt safe enough to rest. Once in a paddock at animal control, she laid down, but couldn't get up. We took her in at AAE. Upon extensive evaluation and radiographs by our vet, we learned that Easton had a fractured pelvis. Her prognosis was questionable, but despite the fracture, she was a very ... (Read More)happy, otherwise healthy, friendly, and outgoing filly with youth on her side. She was hospitalized for a week or so for night-time monitoring, as she was having a tough time getting up once she laid down. After discussing all options, we decided to give her 60-days to see how she progressed. Easton is a fighter; she did quite well. She was closely monitored on stall rest for another four months. She reached a milestone at six months, and her hip radiographs look GOOD! However, she has had one setback over the last couple months of her stall rest. She had grown like a weed. She was a very large yearling, and her rapid growth coupled with confinement due to the fracture resulted in contracted tendons that caused her to 'knuckle' over her front fetlocks when she walked. We were hoping that turnout would help relax the tendons and increase her muscle strength, but it did not. Although, she thoroughly enjoyed her turnout experience after such lengthy stall confinement. Another hurdle for this always smiling lil filly; she needed check ligament surgery to help relax the tendons in her front legs. Three months after surgery, Easton got her turnout once again, and she is doing great. This filly is a special girl that has touched many of AAE's volunteers! She is an absolute character with an amazing personality. She needs a special person to be her friend for life. Due to the pelvic fracture, she will not be able to be ridden, but she promises to be an incredible companion for someone seeking a horsey friend. Are you that person? Easton is current with vaccines, deworming, and hoof and dental care. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Meet Maci, a sweet-tempered three-year-old filly that was part of a collaborative rescue effort in Fallon, NV that saved 56 horses at auction from purchase by a slaughter buyer. Maci arrived at All About Equine Animal Rescue in September 2015. Upon evaluation, it was discovered that Maci had several issues, including a fractured sesmoid bone and torn suspensory ligament in her front right, and Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions in all four fetlock joints. The fracture and tear we knew would heal, but the OCD lesions needed surgical intervention to prevent further/ongoing damage, chronic pain, and a short life. Due to the generosity of ... (Read More)our supporters, funds were raised and Maci had two surgeries in early 2016. Everything went smoothly, and she has recovered nicely. She is now ready to be adopted to a home as a limited riding/companion horse, as her condition will limit her abilities to withstand a training program to become a full riding horse. However, don't let that stop you from considering her. Maci is an absolute love and will make someone a very special life-long friend. My mom has had me for the last 7 years, and unfortunately, she has been unable to spend the time with me that I need. She only wants the best for me and knows that I am too much horse for her.     Maya is a beautiful 12-14 yr old mare that was rescued by her former owner from extreme neglect and abuse. Unfortunately, that owner had to relinquish Maya to AAE at the end of September 2016 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and knew she would no longer be able to work with or care for Maya. After she arrived at AAE, and upon noticing a hitch in her step, we had Maya evaluated by our vet and she was diagnosed with Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis or DSLD. Horse    Age: Adult

Health: Gelded

LOOKING FOR THIS HORSE: He was adopted from Kern County Animal Shelter April 12, 2016. I recently learned he was adopted by a rescue but the person did not know which one or where the rescue is located. This Bay gelding with a white stripe and left front white sock is Sabre SMF, Straight Egyptian Arabian and is 9 years old. He is a papered, registered Arabian horse and he actually belongs to me. I live in the Antelope Valley, part of Los Angeles County. Sabre was living on a feed lease up in Mojave for the past couple years as a companion horse. He should not be ridden. I lost contact with him early this year, the man who had him seemed ... (Read More)to disappear, my contacts thought he had moved away. Not until June 23rd did I finally find out that this horse was confiscated in February by Kern County Animal Control along with other animals with regard to one of their cases, still active. So then I was working with Kern County and last week they told me he was adopted out in April. They said they can not tell me who adopted him or where he is. So I am looking to find him myself and make sure he is alive and well. This is very hard for me to wonder how he is. I am trying to locate him and make sure he is OK. If you have seen him or know anything about this please let me know. Thank you. I am Terri Valentine-Duarte at (661) 270-9367 or (661) 202-2881 (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-03-24-00055Jolene (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

This sweet mare was part of a collaborative 50+ auction rescue. She was said to have been a small child's horse, only to be dumped at auction as if she didn't matter. She was emaciated upon intake and had an infected laceration on a front leg. Her hooves and teeth had been neglected as well. However, after a few months of good nutrition and healthcare, Jolene recovered nicely. Her laceration has healed, and radiographs of a scarred left knee were unremarkable. Jolene was ridden at the rescue to test her abilities. She was willing but didn't appear to know much. Subsequently, she was adopted by a retired gentleman, who put her in training. ... (Read More)However, within a few weeks, he returned her as being too reactive for him. Since we typically find that mature horses can take much longer to train (or retrain) to be riding horses, we suspect that Jolene did not do well with the pressure of the training program. Therefore, we feel Jolene should be adopted out as a project or companion horse only, not a riding horse. She is the type of horse that will benefit from a calm, patient handler with no deadlines in mind for learning/training. Jolene has a motherly, protective personality with young horses and bonds tightly with her herdmates, displaying anxious behavior when separated. She can be possessive over her food, so would need to be fed any supplemental feed away from others. However, the above not withstanding, Jolene is a sweet mare who loves attention and being groomed and will provide her future adopter with much love and satisfaction. She is current with vaccinations and deworming and hoof and dental care. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014 after he and his companion were abandoned by their owner and found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Not only was Magic in poor condition, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a large, dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a large ginger ... (Read More)root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good, everything was within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed, then treated with a chemo agent to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and he is gaining confidence by the day. He has a very willing spirit, and he's a ton of fun to work with. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
