Rescue Me ID: 18-05-16-00204Helios (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Gelded, Fearful/Anxious

Helios is a very special little gelding, foaled April 2012. He is all the makings for a spectacular liberty partner! Very attentive, sensitive, and spirited. He is a very sweet little pony with refined face and features, and will come with his foal papers. I'm not familiar with ASPC, but if someone was to update his papers, he'd make a robust and flashy show pony! Helios has his feet trimmed 4/30, and was dewormed 5/02. Gets regular psyllium. He is on an orchardgrass diet with some grazing. I've had him for two years, and just this month for the first time he was acting studdy with my mares in heat, and trying to boss around my gelding ... (Read More)(all are full sized horses), so he has been separated. Usually, he's happiest and most relaxed in a herd setting. I'm rehoming due to needing to downsize for personal health reasons. He has never offered to bite or kick. No known health or lameness cocnerns. Last full vet exam at Alamo Pintado October 2017. Needs a partner who will enjoy life with him. His sensitivity and spunk are such rewarding parts about working with him, but makes him not suitable for handlers who have a strict agenda, are rough or insensitive, overly passive, nervous, or inexperienced. He would do great in advanced liberty training, natural horsemanship, even possibly equine assisted psychotherapy in the right, small program. He is not a kids pony. He is not broke under saddle or to cart. Helios is a heart driven pony who will fulfill and impress a patient, balanced leader. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-05-16-00198Aquarius (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Aquarius is a 19yo OTTB. He's a sweet, gentle gelding with personality. He's the first to greet visitors at the gate and slobber on them. He is an extremely brave horse whom I've literally never seen spook. Has never threatened to bite, kick, rear, or buck. (Unless ripping around turn out, of course!) He's excellent at liberty, perfect longe line mount, lead line, and light arena work. I could see him going back into work with a pony clubber, but he has not been in consistent work for a year & a half (random hacks & trail rides throughout) so I'm advertising him 'as is.' No soundness issues. Only maintenance is MSM for light arthritis, does ... (Read More)not affect his ability to work or enjoy life at all. Aquarius is jovial and considerate. The rudest thing he might do is pull a little kid over to grass, but is easy for an able handler to remind him his manners. He's even done some therapeutic riding and liberty work. I have experience with PATH, as far as his eligibility for that it would depend on the program and what exact role you're looking for him to fill. I could see him excelling in an educational program, equine assisted psychotherapy, anywhere with lots of visitors to say hi to! He loves attention. Pony club. Adult who wants a horse to love, light riding. English or Western, snaffle or hackamore. Super fun on trail for confident, strong rider. Not a packer on trail. Last trim 04/30. Dewormed 05/02. Teeth and West Nile vaccine 05/02. Week of Psyllium starting 05/12. Rehoming due to my personal health, need to downsize. Loving home with lots of attention a must. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-05-13-00268Gunner (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Gunner came to AAE with two of his buddies in mid-January 2018 from a neglect situation. Fortunately, Gunner was in pretty good condition upon arrival. Gunner is about 19 years old, stands about 15.0 hands. He has some trust issues and we're slowly earning his trust. So far, we haven' identified any major issues. We've found some ticks on Gunner, too, but he's not infested like his buddies. Gunner, is a shy guy that appears to have been mis-handled at some point in life. He is halterable, curious, gentle, and willing....but sensitive and needs time to build trust and confidence. Per prior owner, he was started under saddle but not ... (Read More)ridden consistently, and has not been ridden for some time (years). We'll continue to build trust and confidence with Gunner while he is with AAE, continue groundwork, and when ready, reintroduce him to a saddle. He will be looking for a home with experience with horses with trust issues; and someone willing to give him the time he needs to trust and flourish before asking more of him than he can comfortably give. So far, Gunner tends to be evasive for haltering, is fairly good leading, but needs more confidence; he seems to feel vulnerable with leg and hoof handling; and he is quite connected to Amigo. That being said, he's made regular progress, and he's becoming more willing to interact with humans. Gunner is a handsome guy, and we're looking forward to breaking through the surface of this guy and earning his trust. He is up to date with vaccines, deworming, hoof and dental care. Rescue Me ID: 18-05-13-00264Sandi (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

Sandi came to AAE on Janaury 7, 2018, after her owner was experiencing a family health and financial crisis. Sandi is a 5 year old Arabian mare. We picked her up from her boarding facility in the midst of winter weather. The facility owner said she had been moved to the roundpen because she ran right through electric fencing, 'very hot' electric fencing. Sadly, we found a very cute, but skinny lil' mare enduring the elements with no shelter, no wind break, and no food. We can't help but wonder if she was in the roundpen because her owner was months behind in rent, or maybe she braved the 'hot' fence because she was cold and needed food. ... (Read More)Sandi loaded quietly, but she didn't travel well. She danced in the trailer the entire ride to AAE. Once at AAE, she had a difficult time settling into a paddock alone. With a little time and some rearranging, she calmed and focused on food. She's making steady progress and is looking great. Thankfully, her vet check went well fairly well. Besides her lack of weight, she has a few melanomas under/around her tail, not uncommon for white (gray) horses. Fortunately, none are creating any issues that require removal. She was a bit naughty for the farrier; she needs some extra work with handling her hind hooves, and she needs a bit of confidence. She tends to rely on another horse for confidence and gets very stressed and reactive when no other horse is around. We'll work on building her confidence before we ask much more of her. We were told Sandi has been ridden in the past, and she was described as 'green, very green'. . Sandi is up to date with vaccines, deworming, hoof, and dental care. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

AAE welcomed Kitty, a pretty young filly, from the DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary on Feb 28, 2018. There are many more in need of homes. Kitty spent some time at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center for gentling and basic handling. Horse    Age: Foal

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

AAE welcomed Gentry, a pretty young mare, and Foley, her little 'red' colt from the DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary in September 2017. When they arrived, young Foley seemed a bit lethargic and small for his age, but mom is small, too. Nothing significant was found during vet exam. After a few weeks at AAE, his energy level increased, and he was finally running and bucking through his paddock, like baby boys do. He and mom play well together. He has also become friends with Blue. They play like two kids on the playground. Blue is such a great babysitter. He worries and watches intensely when Foley moves to other end of the ... Animal ID: 0479158Summer (female)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Very Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed)

Summer - Registration #0479158 Age: 26 Years Height: 13.3 HH Location: Northridge, California Adoption Fee: $475.00 My name is Summer and I am sad that I have to find a new home at my age. I am the absolute sweetest horse in the world, but my owner is moving to Europe in January and she can not take me with her :(. I don't want to leave her, but she truly wants to do what is best for me so that I am safe. I hope that whoever I go with, she will be allowed to visit me again... Just a heart-wrenching scenario, of two beings who really love each other, and life is taking them in a new direction. Summer is a perfect beginners horse for a ... (Read More)little girl who wants to learn about horses and who wants to do lead line. She is super gentle, well mannered, and very calm. She is super laid back but can be encouraged to trot if you play with her. Going fast is NOT her thing. She has been barefoot her whole life and English trained. She has been on the trail, fine with traffic, people and other animals. She has an opinion about other horses, but once she knows them she gets along with them. She is lacking muscle, (JMO) needs a diet change (she can not have alfalfa!), and some light exercise to help with her top-line. She is also a little stiff in her hips and hocks. The owner has been giving her Cosequin, but she would also benefit from some chiro and acupuncture. Summer is looking for her final home where she can be loved by a child. Since she is small and lacking muscle, riding is not recommended for her at this time. But if YOU are looking for a beginner safe horse for your child or family, that you want to give lots of TLC to, she will return that plus so much more! Do not miss out on this gem! She is ALL LOVE!     Kiwi was relinquished by her owner after losing interest. She was thin, and her hooves were much overgrown. She came in with severely club hooves, fronts and hinds, and is slated for surgery (check ligament release) early 2017, after rain/mud are no longer a concern for housing and post-surgical care. Little is known about Kiwi's background, but apparently she came from an Indian reservation. She is a sweet, curious, and social filly. Hoof handling is an issue, but may stem from hoof pain or fear from past pain/abuse. PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
