Rescue Me ID: 15-05-21-00089Ahli (male)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed)

Located in Banning, CA Adoption Fee $500.00 Ahli is a 21 year old stallion, 14.3 HH. In excellent health and condition. He is still a stallion because current owner got him 3 years ago after the lady next door passed away. She did not want to geld him at that age. He is well broke to ride, and is actually a pretty solid guy - on the lazier side. Can be ridden by a solid beginner with supervision. He is good on trail and in an arena. An 8 year old rode him last summer. Owner can no longer to afford to keep him. Not seeking a breeding home. He is currently barefoot, loads like a champ, stands to be trimmed in his stall. His only ... (Read More)quirk is his nippiness - - - you have to be aware of that when you are around him, and he has to roll before you ride him. He is half Spanish and Real McCoy, Naborr on the bottom. Serious inquiries only! Saffyre Sanctuary is agent for this horse. Please call (818) 842-4368 for more information. Thank you! (Less)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant

Bay Charm is a gorgeous mare! Although she is not broke she has been handled and loves attention! She will make a great project for an experienced person. She gets along with other horses, and is more alfa than submissive. She has been waiting for her person, could that be YOU?! This is one horse that is part of a large group of Arabians that are in desperate need of re-homing. Their limited handling will require that adoptive owners be very experienced in re-starting these horses. They are halter broke, at some point have been trailered, and some have been ridden. Saffyre Sanctuary is the agent for these horses. Prospective adopters will ... (Read More)need to go through a screening and site inspection. Adoption Fee: $350.00 - serious inquires only! Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Gelded, Arthritis, Abused/Neglected

Slick is in DESPERATE need for rehoming. We rescued him from a previous 'owner' not long ago, since then our well collapsed and I am struggling to keep up with the water needs. He is underweight and has slight arthritis in his knees and hips so he is not rideable, however, it does not hinder his everyday abilities. In the winter he is a little worse but Asprin works great for him. If I cannot get him homes ASAP I will have to find help to have him Euthanized. He deserves a 2nd chance, please allow Slick to become part of a forever family. He was pulled off the track (which explains his knees) and then used for children's birthday ... Buster requires front shoes with pads to be serviceably sound and can be ridden on flat or slightly rolling hills terrain only.     Hopi is one of the November Rescue Miracle mares (Mare #11). She arrived in late March 2012 with a yearling colt, Turner, at her side.     AAE took in this beautiful, lil' stocky girl in October 2013 after relinquishment by her owner due to a financial distress situation. We were told she is a seasoned riding horse. Fancy is a very sweet mare, but can be pushy when food is involved. She enjoys attention, grooming, and has a sweet interest in little ones. Fancy seems to be a solid, willing riding horse with considerable experience under saddle. Rescue Me ID: 14-09-29-00810Smokey (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

AAE took in this handsome TB gelding in November 2013 after relinquishment by his owner resulting from a financial distress situation. He loaded easily when we picked him up. He seemed to be an absolute gentlemen, and we were told he was an ol' trail horse. He was very thin and suffering from a respiratory infection/mild pneumonia. Smokey received a visit from Dr. Stolba, and he was placed on antibiotics while in quarantine. Smokey truly is a kind ol' soul, but he does have a few quirks that need exploring and work. Some days he meets you at the gate, other days, he'd rather be alone and plays hard to get. Those times are fewer and ... (Read More)farther between, but still a part of his day. Working in the round pen is not something he enjoys, and he didn't seem to have much understanding of anything but 'go'. However, he's made great progress. He readily accepted a bit/bridle, and he stood pretty quietly while saddling, with no resistance. However, as his rider's leg went up and over to mount, he bolted. Radiographs of his withers area indicated an old fractured vertebrae with a piece of bone that migrated back a couple vertebra in his shoulder area. No wonder, he was trying to escape pain. Based upon the location and saddle placement, a saddle is likely a source of substantial pain. As a result, Smokey will be best suited as a companion. He also has multiple melanomas under his tail, and a sarcoid in his inguinal area. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental care, but his hooves are still a work in progress. He manages them well, but does not do well with hoof trimming, possibly due to his shoulder issues. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please see website for current information.     This handsome guy was relinquished by his owner in January 2014 after his owner developed health issues. He shared a (dry) pasture with another horse for 12 years, and he was very protective of his pasture-mate, much to his detriment. Banjo had a very sweet side, but he also tested his handler, and displayed some naughty stud-like behavior. He was fearful of ropes, and he also challenged his handler when approached with a lead rope. We were told he was used as a child's riding horse (hard to imagine) 12 years prior. Banjo has been coming around nicely. Separating him from his former pasture-mate helped him tremendously. He has ... (Read More)softened, and he is becoming a very social guy that enjoys attention. Rescue Me ID: 14-09-24-01386Magic (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014 after he and his companion were abandoned by their owner and found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Not only was Magic in poor condition, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a large, dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a large ginger ... (Read More)root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good, everything was within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed, then treated with a chemo agent to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and he is gaining confidence by the day. He has a very willing spirit, and he's a ton of fun to work with. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Fearful/Anxious

Goldwing's story is one of separation, detachment, and motherly love for a disabled child. As a broodmare for most of her life, she adored and cared for her children, as best as she could. The wonderful mother she is. People would them taken away from her, every time, leaving her with an emptiness and distain people in general. Over the last year, we worked through her anxieties, trained her to be ridden, something she loves; feeling that she has a purpose and reason to exist. When her daughter Godiva needed to be re-homed, we stepped in, and Goldwing's adopter also agreed to adopt Godiva. The joy of having these two souls reunited was ... (Read More)beautiful to watch and they are now inseparable. However, the emotional healing that I thought I would see in Goldwing's eyes turned to worry and concern... Godiva, had the potential to be had been top level dressage horse, but an unknown lameness issue appeared when she was only 3 years old. Retired, she stood in a field for almost 10 years. In 2012, when the person who originally adopted her realized that her rehabilitation would be more than she could handle, Goldwing's adopter, adopted Godiva for Goldwing. With a full vet check, including x-rays, ultrasounds, you name it, she was diagnosed with navicular in left front, and very slight ringbone in the right front. We immediately started our treatment plan and within 9 months was about 90% sound. However, her new owner, being so far away, was getting impatient on her recovery progress and costs involved, and she was receiving conflicting information from other 'experts' in her area. This information made her decide to stop our treatment plan and within 5 months, she regressed back to her original lameness, if not worse. These 'experts' who never had seen this horse in person, told the adopter to have Godiva put down since they thought she had a neurological problem. I told her I would not do that to her, or Goldwing. For the last few months, when we turn Goldwing and Godiva out together, Goldwing makes Godiva move, no matter how much pain Godiva is in, and will not let her out of her sight. She knows she is hurting, and is frantic when she can't see her in the stall next to her. She is screaming inside for someone to help her baby out of this pain. Since the treatment plan is very expensive, we have been unable to do this for her on our own. We possibly have an alternative remedy for her, which is not quite as expensive, but ideally, our past treatment and the new homeopathies should be combined for a complete recovery, which could take as long as 4 years. The body will take the time it needs to heal and only the universe knows how long that is. For the past week we have had her on bute and she is moving well again, though this is just to get her past her immediate discomfort. Bute does not work on neurological issues so we know for a fact that we are dealing with sore feet.(Navicular) I made Goldwing and Godiva a soul contract that they would never again be apart, and I will keep that promise. We are ultimately looking for someone who will feel their story, and not 'use' them. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
