Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament

Scotty is a beautiful 11 year old quarter horse with a sweet, playful spirit. He loves playing with a ball and loves affection. He has tons of personality!! He was born with a congenital birth defect that affects the range of motion in his neck which causes him to lose feeling in his back feet when ridden. The vet said he CANNOT be ridden. Looking for someone who could love him as a pet. He would be a great companion for another horse or would be great as a pasture or therapy horse too. He is up to date on shots, deworming and his teeth have been recently floated and hooves trimmed. ... (Read More)Serious inquiries only please. Can text more photos of him too if you were interested. Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Turner is one of Stinkin' Rose Ranch's 2011 November Miracle Rescue horses. He arrived in late March 2012 at mom's side (Hopi, aka Mare #11).. He was so fearful of humans, he could turn on a dime. Thus, his name, Turner. He obviously had little to no handling before arrival and possibly had a bad human experience, as well. He was adopted in March 2014; however, by December 2015, his family was faced with many challenges including relocation via military orders to Texas. Unfortunately, they were unable to include Turner in the big move, and he returned to AAE. Turner was started under saddle in late 2014/early 2015, but due to his ... (Read More)owner's injury/surgery, he was unable to continue. He would benefit from revisiting groundwork, and rebuilding his confidence from the ground up. Turner has an amazingly fun, curious, and sweet disposition, and with his own, experienced person, he will make an amazing little partner. Adoption fee subject to change based on training.     Toby is a 7 year old QH cross gelding, 15.1 hands, who came to Animal Guardians Horse Rescue only 1 week ago from the Kern County Animal Services. He was 350 lb. underweight and had severe instinctive flight survival behavior. He is just now beginning to allow himself to be touched all over. caught, haltered, and fly masked. Toby has an eye infection, very long sharp teeth that need a float, overgrown hooves, cuts & scrapes all over his body, and soreness in his joints from being so starved.     Very kind gelding, with undetermined lameness issue. Responds well to praevecox but needs it daily. He is being borded in Galt CA. Might be rideable but probably needs to be a companion only. I can't afford to keep him any longer and need to find him a home otherwise he will have to be put down. I don't want him to go to the auction he's just too good for that. He is about 15 and has a wonderful smooth lope, he is gaited. If you can spend the time on him and keep him on meds, maybe supplements? He may still be useable for walk/trot trail riding. The vet and farrier can't find any issues with him.

Rescue Me ID: 15-08-03-00715Hopi (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

Hopi is one of the 2011 November Rescue Miracle mares (Mare #11). She arrived in late March 2012 with a yearling colt, Turner, at her side. Hopi was fearful of humans, unapproachable and very reactive. She obviously had little to no handling before her arrival and possibly had a bad human experience as well. She also had a skin condition on her face, likely due to over-exposure to the sun on the non-pigmented skin around her eyes and muzzle that is common in some greys and appaloosas. We believe this skin condition made her even more sensitive to touch than she otherwise may have been and contributed to her tendency to be very head-shy. ... (Read More)Fast forwarding to 2016, Hopi is coming along nicely. While slow to trust, she has made good progress. She has spent time in two foster homes and is steadily learning to develop relationships with humans. She can be haltered and has good ground manners. At her current foster home, she is being exposed to a variety of experiences in order to boost her confidence. She regularly goes on walks in the neighborhood, exposing her to cars, dogs, and other horses, and is doing great. Additionally, her skin condition has improved and is easily managed by limiting exposure to the mid-day sun through pasture/stable management and using fly masks. Hopi is the type of mare that will develop deep bonds with her owner once she trusts her/him. She is ready for her own special person who is willing to make a long-term commitment to patience and daily attention. She will require an advanced handler with substantial experience training from the ground up. She has not been started under saddle, and she is not suitable as a child's horse at this time.     AAE took in this beautiful, lil' stocky girl in October 2013 after relinquishment by her owner due to a financial distress situation. We were told she is a seasoned riding horse. Fancy is a very sweet mare, but can be pushy when food is involved. She enjoys attention, grooming, and has a sweet interest in little ones. Fancy seems to be a solid, willing riding horse with considerable experience under saddle. She recently tested positive for Cushing's, and she gets a daily Pergolide tablet and takes it readily in a carrot 'pocket'. She also has thin soles and will likely do best in shoes; however, boots may be a good alternative. She ... (Read More)is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care.     Located in Banning, CA Adoption Fee $500.00 Ahli is a 21 year old stallion, 14.3 HH. In excellent health and condition. He is still a stallion because current owner got him 3 years ago after the lady next door passed away. She did not want to geld him at that age.     This handsome guy was relinquished by his owner in January 2014 after his owner developed health issues. He shared a (dry) pasture with another horse for 12 years, and he was very protective of his pasture-mate, much to his detriment. Banjo had a very sweet side, but he also tested his handler, and displayed some naughty stud-like behavior. He was fearful of ropes, and he also challenged his handler when approached with a lead rope. We were told he was used as a child's riding horse (hard to imagine) 12 years prior. Rescue Me ID: 14-09-24-01386Magic (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014 after he and his companion were abandoned by their owner and found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Not only was Magic in poor condition, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a large, dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a large ginger ... (Read More)root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good, everything was within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed, then treated with a chemo agent to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and he is gaining confidence by the day. He has a very willing spirit, and he's a ton of fun to work with. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-12-09-00036Goldwing & Lady Godiva (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Fearful/Anxious

Goldwing's story is one of separation, detachment, and motherly love for a disabled child. As a broodmare for most of her life, she adored and cared for her children, as best as she could. The wonderful mother she is. People would them taken away from her, every time, leaving her with an emptiness and distain people in general. Over the last year, we worked through her anxieties, trained her to be ridden, something she loves; feeling that she has a purpose and reason to exist. When her daughter Godiva needed to be re-homed, we stepped in, and Goldwing's adopter also agreed to adopt Godiva. The joy of having these two souls reunited was ... (Read More)beautiful to watch and they are now inseparable. However, the emotional healing that I thought I would see in Goldwing's eyes turned to worry and concern... Godiva, had the potential to be had been top level dressage horse, but an unknown lameness issue appeared when she was only 3 years old. Retired, she stood in a field for almost 10 years. In 2012, when the person who originally adopted her realized that her rehabilitation would be more than she could handle, Goldwing's adopter, adopted Godiva for Goldwing. With a full vet check, including x-rays, ultrasounds, you name it, she was diagnosed with navicular in left front, and very slight ringbone in the right front. We immediately started our treatment plan and within 9 months was about 90% sound. However, her new owner, being so far away, was getting impatient on her recovery progress and costs involved, and she was receiving conflicting information from other 'experts' in her area. This information made her decide to stop our treatment plan and within 5 months, she regressed back to her original lameness, if not worse. These 'experts' who never had seen this horse in person, told the adopter to have Godiva put down since they thought she had a neurological problem. I told her I would not do that to her, or Goldwing. For the last few months, when we turn Goldwing and Godiva out together, Goldwing makes Godiva move, no matter how much pain Godiva is in, and will not let her out of her sight. She knows she is hurting, and is frantic when she can't see her in the stall next to her. She is screaming inside for someone to help her baby out of this pain. Since the treatment plan is very expensive, we have been unable to do this for her on our own. We possibly have an alternative remedy for her, which is not quite as expensive, but ideally, our past treatment and the new homeopathies should be combined for a complete recovery, which could take as long as 4 years. The body will take the time it needs to heal and only the universe knows how long that is. For the past week we have had her on bute and she is moving well again, though this is just to get her past her immediate discomfort. Bute does not work on neurological issues so we know for a fact that we are dealing with sore feet.(Navicular) I made Goldwing and Godiva a soul contract that they would never again be apart, and I will keep that promise. We are ultimately looking for someone who will feel their story, and not 'use' them. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
