Animal ID: 0479158Summer (female)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Very Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed)

Summer - Registration #0479158 Age: 26 Years Height: 13.3 HH Location: Northridge, California Adoption Fee: $475.00 My name is Summer and I am sad that I have to find a new home at my age. I am the absolute sweetest horse in the world, but my owner is moving to Europe in January and she can not take me with her :(. I don't want to leave her, but she truly wants to do what is best for me so that I am safe. I hope that whoever I go with, she will be allowed to visit me again... Just a heart-wrenching scenario, of two beings who really love each other, and life is taking them in a new direction. Summer is a perfect beginners horse for a ... (Read More)little girl who wants to learn about horses and who wants to do lead line. She is super gentle, well mannered, and very calm. She is super laid back but can be encouraged to trot if you play with her. Going fast is NOT her thing. She has been barefoot her whole life and English trained. She has been on the trail, fine with traffic, people and other animals. She has an opinion about other horses, but once she knows them she gets along with them. She is lacking muscle, (JMO) needs a diet change (she can not have alfalfa!), and some light exercise to help with her top-line. She is also a little stiff in her hips and hocks. The owner has been giving her Cosequin, but she would also benefit from some chiro and acupuncture. Summer is looking for her final home where she can be loved by a child. Since she is small and lacking muscle, riding is not recommended for her at this time. But if YOU are looking for a beginner safe horse for your child or family, that you want to give lots of TLC to, she will return that plus so much more! Do not miss out on this gem! She is ALL LOVE! Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Vaccinations Current, Arthritis

Annie is a healthy Paint mare. She is around 17 years of age. She has arthritis in her hocks, which makes her unsuitable for heavy riders. She is ok at the walk for a balanced light rider. Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Vaccinations Current

June Bug is an 18 year old thoroughbred mare. She is registered and was previously a race horse when she was young. She is 16.2 hands tall. June Bug loves trail riding through the redwoods and running on the beach. She is very sweet and loves people. She has been pastured with geldings and mares before. She was very compatible with both. She does tend to be down the line in herd dominance. June did not have any dental care until I acquired her 3 years ago. She has had some teeth pulled. This does not affect her ability to use a bit when riding. She does require grass hay pellets and senior pellets soaked for her food. She is unable to chew ... (Read More)hay. The cost of the senior food and pellets is the same as when I bought her orchard grass hay. She maintains her weight very well on this regiment. June Bug is a wonderful girl. Because of financial changes, I am looking for a happy home for her. If you are interested, please let know. I will be happy to give you more information and the number of her vet if you would like to know about her health care. (Less)

Kiwi was relinquished by her owner after losing interest. She was thin, and her hooves were much overgrown. She came in with severely club hooves, fronts and hinds, and is slated for surgery (check ligament release) early 2017, after rain/mud are no longer a concern for housing and post-surgical care. Little is known about Kiwi's background, but apparently she came from an Indian reservation. She is a sweet, curious, and social filly. When we arrived to pick her up, it took 2.5 hours to earn her trust and place a halter on her. Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Vaccinations Current

Missi is a 2001 registered TB mare. She is a healthy girl updated on all vaccines, coggins, teeth are floated and wears front shoes. She is still recovering from a tendon injury (front left) so needs space/pasture to walk/stretch it for full recovery (per UC Davis Vets). She loves being around people, being groomed, inherently curious and silly. She hasn't enjoyed being ridden since we've owned her (over a year), other than being walked on a lead. I'm assuming that would change with he healing of her tendon, as she has been shown extensively by her previous owner in english/hunter/jumper, but also rides western. Loves kids! I am 9 months ... (Read More)pregnant and need to rehome (to the right home) asap. She has only known love all her life (her second owner had her from a filly until we got her) and will only go to a loving home willing to open their arms to her. She has happily lived in a herd in the past and currently boards alone in a paddock. She is great with other horses, very low-key except she charges the fence at her buddies come dinner time. I've fed her with other horses in the past and she just pins her ears and takes over whichever pile she wants...a bossy thing, but not actually aggressive. Thank you! (Less)

Diesel came to AAE from the USFS in New Mexico after participation in a wild horse gentling program at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center. Diesel is a cute and curious little guy. He will need a patient and committed partner to further his trust and confidence in humans.     Tilly and her colt came to AAE in the end of June 2014 after an animal control cruelty seizure. She was in very poor, emaciated condition, and bloated, and shortly after intake, she suffered a serious case of colic. Fortunately, Tilly had an overnight stay in ICU at Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center (LBEMC) and recovered. There is no doubt this girl is a fighter with a strong will to survive. Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

AAE took in this handsome TB gelding in November 2013 after relinquishment by his owner resulting from a financial distress situation. He loaded easily when we picked him up. He seemed to be an absolute gentlemen, and we were told he was an ol' trail horse. He was very thin and suffering from a respiratory infection/mild pneumonia. Smokey received a visit from Dr. Stolba, and he was placed on antibiotics while in quarantine. Smokey truly is a kind ol' soul, but he does have a few quirks that need exploring and work. Some days he meets you at the gate, other days, he'd rather be alone and plays hard to get. Those times are fewer and ... (Read More)farther between, but still a part of his day. Working in the round pen is not something he enjoys, and he didn't seem to have much understanding of anything but 'go'. However, he's made great progress. He readily accepted a bit/bridle, and he stood pretty quietly while saddling, with no resistance. However, as his rider's leg went up and over to mount, he bolted. Radiographs of his withers area indicated an old fractured vertebrae with a piece of bone that migrated back a couple vertebra in his shoulder area. No wonder, he was trying to escape pain. Based upon the location and saddle placement, a saddle is likely a source of substantial pain. As a result, Smokey will be best suited as a companion. He also has multiple melanomas under his tail, and a sarcoid in his inguinal area. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental care, but his hooves are still a work in progress. He manages them well, but does not do well with hoof trimming, possibly due to his shoulder issues. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please see website for current information. PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
