Rescue Me ID: 14-04-20-00250

Horse    Age: Adult

Unfortunately I know very little about this horse. The person who currently owns the horse cannot take care of it anymore. It has not been well fed in days. The horse does not belong to us, but the owner is ready to let the horse go. We do not want to see the horse euthanized. If anyone is available that would be greatly appreciated .

Wonderful well trained registered Arab gelding, extremely intelligent. No one can believe he is 23, he is in great shape and has always been well cared for. Breaks my heart, but I can no longer afford to board him and he deserves to be with someone who will ride him. Great trail horse.

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed)

Durina (aka Sunshine) is 16 year old, Oldenburg Mare. The person who adopted this horse from us decided after 2 years that she no longer wants her. This mare has been in our custody since the adoption, and I don't think it was a mistake when she refused to get on the trailer to go home to this person. So why is this horse different - when we got her we were told 'if you just fight her for ten minutes she'll stop and get to work.' A dressage horse for 14 years, she never had a week off, and her only experiences with people were experiences of what I call 'rape'. An associate of mine tried to find her a home, but when she went through 6 ... (Read More)different people in 6 days, I knew there was something really wrong. No one wanted to put up with her attitude, pacing, biting, etc. Upon her arrival at our sanctuary, I took one look at her and this poor girl had a prominent hunters bump and could not pick up her shoulders. She shuffled her feet into her stall and was quiet, never displaying any of the behaviors they described. She was in pain and she knew that I knew it. Fast forward to today - she is perfectly sound with a great attitude. That being said, her attitude change came from us adjusting our way of thinking. She is a left brained introvert, a puzzle solver, a super thinker. She needs someone who is smarter than her (not easy to find), since trying to make her do anything causes her to revert back to her old behavior. Her riding days are over and she wants someone to do mind games with her, as well as exercises that build her confidence. She was told she was never good enough, but I know better, she is great! She now wants to be with people, but people who are not going to 'use' her. She needs someone or some place that will cherish her for the individual she is. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-12-09-00036Goldwing & Lady Godiva (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Fearful/Anxious

Goldwing's story is one of separation, detachment, and motherly love for a disabled child. As a broodmare for most of her life, she adored and cared for her children, as best as she could. The wonderful mother she is. People would them taken away from her, every time, leaving her with an emptiness and distain people in general. Over the last year, we worked through her anxieties, trained her to be ridden, something she loves; feeling that she has a purpose and reason to exist. When her daughter Godiva needed to be re-homed, we stepped in, and Goldwing's adopter also agreed to adopt Godiva. The joy of having these two souls reunited was ... (Read More)beautiful to watch and they are now inseparable. However, the emotional healing that I thought I would see in Goldwing's eyes turned to worry and concern... Godiva, had the potential to be had been top level dressage horse, but an unknown lameness issue appeared when she was only 3 years old. Retired, she stood in a field for almost 10 years. In 2012, when the person who originally adopted her realized that her rehabilitation would be more than she could handle, Goldwing's adopter, adopted Godiva for Goldwing. With a full vet check, including x-rays, ultrasounds, you name it, she was diagnosed with navicular in left front, and very slight ringbone in the right front. We immediately started our treatment plan and within 9 months was about 90% sound. However, her new owner, being so far away, was getting impatient on her recovery progress and costs involved, and she was receiving conflicting information from other 'experts' in her area. This information made her decide to stop our treatment plan and within 5 months, she regressed back to her original lameness, if not worse. These 'experts' who never had seen this horse in person, told the adopter to have Godiva put down since they thought she had a neurological problem. I told her I would not do that to her, or Goldwing. For the last few months, when we turn Goldwing and Godiva out together, Goldwing makes Godiva move, no matter how much pain Godiva is in, and will not let her out of her sight. She knows she is hurting, and is frantic when she can't see her in the stall next to her. She is screaming inside for someone to help her baby out of this pain. Since the treatment plan is very expensive, we have been unable to do this for her on our own. We possibly have an alternative remedy for her, which is not quite as expensive, but ideally, our past treatment and the new homeopathies should be combined for a complete recovery, which could take as long as 4 years. The body will take the time it needs to heal and only the universe knows how long that is. For the past week we have had her on bute and she is moving well again, though this is just to get her past her immediate discomfort. Bute does not work on neurological issues so we know for a fact that we are dealing with sore feet.(Navicular) I made Goldwing and Godiva a soul contract that they would never again be apart, and I will keep that promise. We are ultimately looking for someone who will feel their story, and not 'use' them. (Less)

My stallion's real name is 'Omataquiasin' which is Cherokee for All My Ancestors. I call him 'Bo' for short. He will remember everything I taught him on the end of a rope with halter on. I taught him to walk, trot and canter on command and lead, back and to go in/out of the gate with me. He is very smart and needs to be in a squeeze chute to put the halter on which he will do. He was three years old when he was rounded up at West Black Rock, near Gerlach, in Humbolt, NV. The BLM has his birth year as 1994. I'm placing my black mare, 'Mama' along with Bo in hopes that he will run with her forever as they are married. She's from ... (Read More)a different herd, rounded up at Rocky Hill, near Eureka, NV also foaled in 1994. The reason she is only cooperative with hoof trimming in the squeeze chute is because of her witnessing the mexicans and a cowboy roping and choking the stallion in order to conquer him to put on a halter. I never gave the ranch where I boarded them permission to do this! She feels safer in the squeeze than in the round pen on the end of a rope. She has a very kind eye and comes up snickering at feeding time and has nuzzled her babies over to me for bonding after they were born. She's had 3 with me, not all on purpose, I didn't know about the foaling heat. I sold the youngest, Sequoia, and am keeping Raia and Naiomi. It would be wonderful to someday bring the girls to see them in their new home. It would please me to know someone may also work with them and train them to be ridden as Mama is a great jumper and Bo has a very smooth, floating trot. These two need alot of love and trust to develop with their new owner because of the cowboy incident. I can only touch the last half of Mama's body, but I can drive them anywhere, into stalls, trailer, etc. I've learned the most from Bo about body language and it's all been good here. I will ad also that at this particular adoption from Susanville (Litchfield Corrals) in Santa Rosa, I was the first to have my number drawn to pick horses. So, I got the nicest stallion, a beautiful blue roan with salt and pepper mane and tail who was a very cool mid range with all the other stallions. I also picked the nicest mare with great conformation, and also a little baby blue roan, 'Little Big Man'. He was my son's horse (the twin who wasn't in the wheelchair) and he never really got into horses like I expected so Little Man is also available as he's been ridden occasionally bareback, leads, ties, trailers and is good for the trimmer. He's a small 14 1/2 hands, about 13 years old and I think he will make a very CUTE, HANDSOME show pony for a youngster wanting to learn and school him. I'm asking $1,000. for him. He also came from Mama's herd and he's gelded. I pray for only the best for these horses as they are family...it would be a blessing to see them stay together with one people family. He's a blue roan, small 14 1/2 hands, about 13 years old and I think he will make a very CUTE, HANDSOME show pony for a youngster wanting to learn and school him. I'm asking $1,000. for him. He also came from Mama's herd and he's gelded. I pray for only the best for these horses as they are family...it would be a blessing to see them stay together with one people family. Any questions, please call me at (530) 620-2031. Sincerely, Susan Fulmer (Less)

Char is a registered Arabian mare and is still quite the looker! She is sweet, and needs some TLC. Due to her owners health issues, she had been neglected. We have brought her back to health and she is sound. She is broke to ride, and very well behaved under saddle - very willing to try anything you ask gently of her. She is a princess and loves to be pampered. We are seeking a great home for this very special horse, preferably someone that has with experience with timid or abused horses.

Due to his owners health issues, he had been neglected, but we have brought him back with lots of TLC. Ideally he needs to go to someone who loves and has experience handling stallions, since he was recently gelded. We are seeking a great home for this very special horse. PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
