RC is a 15 YO Chestnut Quarter Horse Gelding that we have had for the last 6 years. I bought him to ride with my daughter, but she has lost interest in horses. Last October RC managed to knock down a feeder and got his leg in it and fractured his cannon bone and injured his fetlock. There were no wounds and we only realized it due to the damage to the feeder and his limp. We had the vet come and X-rays were taken to confirm the fracture. He can't be ridden and he limps and cannot be sold. With our oldest daughter in college and our youngest daughter going Off to college soon, we will be selling our property and won't be able to afford to ... (Read More)board him. He is a great looking horse. a big lover, gentle, loves people and attention. He has always been with my daughters mare and needs to be with another horse(s). Because of his personality he would make a great therapy horse. Some have said that he might be able to be rehabilitated, but it would take more time than I have. So, we are looking for someone who would take great care of him and give him the attention he deserves. We will only allow him to go to a very good home, so be prepared to be questioned. (Less)

Coco is a beautiful, kindhearted, extremely gentle and loving quiet mare. She is a 7 year old registered AQHA Quarter Horse. On a scale of 1= bombproof to 10= very wild & feral, Coco is a 2. She is amazingly gentle with children and other animals. Coco is current on all vaccines, dewormer, hoof trims, & teeth float. Due to a permanent spinal defect, Coco will never be rideable, but she would make a wonderful kids' companion horse, and even a great in-hand obstacle course horse. Coco has been rehabilitated from mild starvation and thoroughly tested by our vet for neuro disease. She has permanent spinal defect without neuro symptoms. But she ... (Read More)is in no pain and is able to walk, trot, lope, lie down & roll, and get back up with ease. She is sound in all 4 feet and barefoot and is a relatively easy keeper now that she is rehabilitated. Coco has been participating in the Humane Society of the United States Plan 4 Progress Training Program for 3 months, and has shown great strides in her confidence with the fly sheet, fly mask, spray, hoses, bathing, etc. She has wonderful ground manners and is very easy to catch, halter, lead, groom, & bathe. Coco is looking for a forever loving home of her own with a child, an individual using a wheelchair, or a lonely companion horse. She is available for adoption by contract through our rescue for a minimum adoption fee of $400, which is tax-deductible and will go towards the care of our other 3 'unadoptable' horses with special needs. Coco will NOT be adopted to someone using a boarding stable. She will ONLY go to someone with a private home backyard stable. We are also very willing and happy to contract with a qualified sponsored foster caregiver for long-term or lifetime foster care for Coco. The rescue pays vet bills for foster caregivers, and all contributions are tax-deductible via our 501(c)3. Contact us if you are interested in Coco. Rescue Me ID: 15-08-03-00730Smokey (male)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

AAE took in this handsome TB gelding in November 2013 after relinquishment by his owner resulting from a financial distress situation. He loaded easily when we picked him up. He seemed to be an absolute gentlemen, and we were told he was an ol' trail horse. He was very thin and suffering from a respiratory infection/mild pneumonia. Smokey received a visit from Dr. Stolba, and he was placed on antibiotics while in quarantine. Smokey truly is a kind ol' soul, but he does have a few quirks that need exploring and work. Some days he meets you at the gate, other days, he'd rather be alone and plays hard to get. Those times are fewer and ... (Read More)farther between, but still a part of his day. Working in the round pen is not something he enjoys, and he didn't seem to have much understanding of anything but 'go'. However, he's made great progress. He readily accepted a bit/bridle, and he stood pretty quietly while saddling, with no resistance. However, as his rider's leg went up and over to mount, he bolted. Radiographs of his withers area indicated an old fractured vertebrae with a piece of bone that migrated back a couple vertebra in his shoulder area. No wonder, he was trying to escape pain. Based upon the location and saddle placement, a saddle is likely a source of substantial pain. As a result, Smokey will be best suited as a companion. He also has multiple melanomas under his tail, and a sarcoid in his inguinal area. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental care, but his hooves are still a work in progress. He manages them well, but does not do well with hoof trimming, possibly due to his shoulder issues. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please see website for current information. Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Vaccinations Current

Ruby and her colt (Gem), arrived from a NV feedlot on May 28, 2011. Ruby was very thin and in poor condition, as she was depleting herself to provide for Gem. Her teeth were in very poor condition, with large quids (clumps of partially chewed hay) falling from her mouth. With dental care, nutrition, and all the other needed attention, Ruby regained her health. While she was untouchable when she arrived, Ruby has learned to trust and can perform basic groundwork skills; however, she is very timid with humans and needs a gentle, quiet hand.     Roxie was part of a collaborative rescue effort in Fallon, NV that saved more than 30 horses from purchase by a slaughter buyer. Roxie arrived at AAE on March 25, 2014. Rescue Me ID: 15-08-03-00715Hopi (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

Hopi is one of the November Rescue Miracle mares (Mare #11). She arrived in late March 2012 with a yearling colt, Turner, at her side. Hopi was extremely fearful of humans, unapproachable, and extremely sensitive and reactive. She had little to no handling, and likely a bad human experience. She arrived with a skin condition around her eyes, and due to her extreme reactiveness, evaluation has been a slow process. Hopi has been working with a trainer (Mike V.) off and on for the last year and then some, and she is making slow, steady progress. She will stay on with Mike and continue training until her person comes along, at least for now. ... She is a very sweet, social mare, and is said to be ridable by anyone. However, she has navicular cysts in her front hoof. She is typically sound at the walk but gets sore with too much movement. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

AAE took in this beautiful, lil' stocky girl in October 2013 after relinquishment by her owner due to a financial distress situation. We were told she is a seasoned riding horse. Fancy is a very sweet mare, but can be pushy when food is involved. She enjoys attention, grooming, and has a sweet interest in little ones. Fancy seems to be a solid, willing riding horse with considerable experience under saddle.     This handsome guy was relinquished by his owner in January 2014 after his owner developed health issues. He shared a (dry) pasture with another horse for 12 years, and he was very protective of his pasture-mate, much to his detriment. Banjo had a very sweet side, but he also tested his handler, and displayed some naughty stud-like behavior. He was fearful of ropes, and he also challenged his handler when approached with a lead rope. We were told he was used as a child's riding horse (hard to imagine) 12 years prior. Banjo has been coming around nicely. Separating him from his former pasture-mate helped him tremendously. He has ... (Read More)softened, and he is becoming a very social guy that enjoys attention. He needs a confident handler and consistent handling to continue developing his own confidence. Banjo has not been tested under saddle at this point, and he is NOT a beginner horse. Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014 after he and his companion were abandoned by their owner and found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Not only was Magic in poor condition, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a large, dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a large ginger ... (Read More)root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good, everything was within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed, then treated with a chemo agent to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and he is gaining confidence by the day. He has a very willing spirit, and he's a ton of fun to work with. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-12-09-00036Goldwing & Lady Godiva (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Fearful/Anxious

Goldwing's story is one of separation, detachment, and motherly love for a disabled child. As a broodmare for most of her life, she adored and cared for her children, as best as she could. The wonderful mother she is. People would them taken away from her, every time, leaving her with an emptiness and distain people in general. Over the last year, we worked through her anxieties, trained her to be ridden, something she loves; feeling that she has a purpose and reason to exist. When her daughter Godiva needed to be re-homed, we stepped in, and Goldwing's adopter also agreed to adopt Godiva. The joy of having these two souls reunited was ... (Read More)beautiful to watch and they are now inseparable. However, the emotional healing that I thought I would see in Goldwing's eyes turned to worry and concern... Godiva, had the potential to be had been top level dressage horse, but an unknown lameness issue appeared when she was only 3 years old. Retired, she stood in a field for almost 10 years. In 2012, when the person who originally adopted her realized that her rehabilitation would be more than she could handle, Goldwing's adopter, adopted Godiva for Goldwing. With a full vet check, including x-rays, ultrasounds, you name it, she was diagnosed with navicular in left front, and very slight ringbone in the right front. We immediately started our treatment plan and within 9 months was about 90% sound. However, her new owner, being so far away, was getting impatient on her recovery progress and costs involved, and she was receiving conflicting information from other 'experts' in her area. This information made her decide to stop our treatment plan and within 5 months, she regressed back to her original lameness, if not worse. These 'experts' who never had seen this horse in person, told the adopter to have Godiva put down since they thought she had a neurological problem. I told her I would not do that to her, or Goldwing. For the last few months, when we turn Goldwing and Godiva out together, Goldwing makes Godiva move, no matter how much pain Godiva is in, and will not let her out of her sight. She knows she is hurting, and is frantic when she can't see her in the stall next to her. She is screaming inside for someone to help her baby out of this pain. Since the treatment plan is very expensive, we have been unable to do this for her on our own. We possibly have an alternative remedy for her, which is not quite as expensive, but ideally, our past treatment and the new homeopathies should be combined for a complete recovery, which could take as long as 4 years. The body will take the time it needs to heal and only the universe knows how long that is. For the past week we have had her on bute and she is moving well again, though this is just to get her past her immediate discomfort. Bute does not work on neurological issues so we know for a fact that we are dealing with sore feet.(Navicular) I made Goldwing and Godiva a soul contract that they would never again be apart, and I will keep that promise. We are ultimately looking for someone who will feel their story, and not 'use' them. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
