Rescue Me ID: 15-01-27-00030Slick (male)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Gelded, Arthritis

Slick is approx. 17-19 years old. He is an Overo Paint/TB cross (yes beautiful blue eyes). He was given to us to prevent going to sale for slaughter. Unfortunately my horses are running him away from the food and the herd he wishes to be part of. Slick is NOT RIDEABLE due to arthritis in his knees, they do not hinder his everyday activities. He needs a home where he can live out the rest of his life in peace. We live in the mountains and the terrain is horribly hard for him, but better than the sale. He came to us VERY underweight and we are working on getting it back on him. He would make a GREAT companion horse or pasture mate. I thank you ... (Read More)for your time and everyone's efforts in placing the posted animals on your sight. Sincerely, Angel Matthews angelmatthews83@yahoo.com (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-01-12-00285Roxie (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Roxie was part of a collaborative rescue effort in Fallon, NV that saved 31 horses from purchase by a slaughter buyer. Roxie arrived at AAE on March 17, 2014. She was heavy in foal and one of few auction/feedlot rescues that appeared in good health. She delivered a handsome colt (Dylan) on April 8th. She's a big, beautiful mare with lots of promise. She was initially not approachable, but accepted human interaction in a short period of time. Roxie was recently haltered, but she's quite reactive and will need considerable patience. Rescue Me ID: 15-01-12-00278Kaya (female)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Male Horses Only
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Kaya was part of a collaborative rescue effort in Fallon, NV that saved 31 horses from purchase by a slaughter buyer. Kaya arrived at AAE on March 25, 2014. She was in decent weight as far as auction/rescue horses go, but she unloaded lame after her long haul to AAE. She was in shoes, and it was obvious they'd been in place much longer than they should have. Radiographs revealed some laminitis and thin soles, primarily in the front right, but also front left. She was also initially believed to be pregnant, but was not. She was said to be a younger mare by the auction rescue team, but turns out dental showed she's likely a mid-20s mare. She ... (Read More)is an affectionately sweet, and enjoys human attention/grooming. Her ground manners are very nice, and she seems to be a solid riding horse (probably and old ranch horse). Her teeth were in very poor condition, and she thanks Melissa Shurr, CEqDT and Dr. Stolba for their kindness in helping her back to good health. She is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental, and she's been doing well in shoes (front and rear). She is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Rescue Me ID: 15-01-12-00273Hopi (female)

Horse    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Hopi is one of the November Rescue Miracle mares (Mare #11). She arrived in late March 2012 with a yearling colt, Turner, at her side. She was extremely fearful of humans, and extremely sensitive/reactive. She arrived with a skin condition around her eyes, and due to her extreme reactiveness, evaluation has been a slow process. Hopi has been working with a trainer (Mike V.) off and on for the last year, and she is making slow, steady progress. She will stay on with Mike and continue training until her person comes along. Rescue Me ID: 15-01-12-00264Fancy (female)

Horse    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Vaccinations Current

AAE took in this beautiful, lil' stocky girl in October 2013 after relinquishment by her owner due to a financial distress situation. We were told she is a seasoned riding horse. Fancy is a very sweet mare, but can be pushy when food is involved. She enjoys attention, grooming, and has a sweet interest in little ones. Fancy seems to be a solid, willing riding horse with considerable experience under saddle. She recently tested positive for Cushing's, and she gets a daily Pergolide tablet and takes it readily in a carrot 'pocket'. She also has thin soles and will likely do best in shoes; however, boots may be a good alternative. She ... (Read More)is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Rescue Me ID: 15-01-11-00356Ajib (male)

Horse    Age: Senior

Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis, Abused/Neglected

Ajib was going to be put down after his owner died in May 2014. My friend rescued him, hoping he could be a companion horse and live out his years in Elfin Forest, an unincorporated community of North San Diego county. She was aware he couldn't be a riding horse- he has some degeneration and possible bone fusion in his coffin bone in his front right hoof. He limps occasionally but doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain. She had 3 farriers assess him and they all felt regular trims are sufficient. She found out after taking him that he his life wasn't the greatest. He had never been socialized with another horse, so he was aggressive ... (Read More)toward horses- couldn't put him in a pasture. He had also been neglected for many years- hadn't seen a farrier, vet or a full belly in many years. He was a mess- showing food aggression (can you blame him?) and lack of boundaries. Fast forward 6 months and Ajib has gotten so much better. He has filled out- no more bony hips or ribs- and he seems to be able to get along with other horses- through corrals. He hasn't been tested yet in a pasture, but he has a stable mate that he gets along with very well. He is also a little better with food and will wait to have his senior feed in the bucket. Unfortunately he has scared my friend one too many times. He definitely needs an experienced hand and my friend is very much a novice. She feels she has done everything and paying over $400 in boarding for a horse she can't walk around is too much to handle. I can't take him- I have two very old horses that couldn't defend themselves against a potentially aggressive horse. My arab is 30 and I've had him over 25 years. Not a risk I feel is worth it. I feel horrible for Ajib and that is why I'm helping my friend and him. Not only does he deserve a second chance, but I think he deserves a third. To be honest, I feel a sense of responsibility for Ajib. I was the one who 'found' him (thanks Facebook!), and was hoping he could live in my corral as a companion for my old Arab gelding. Trying to locate a rescue for him is something I have chosen to do, and my friend would be thrilled if I found a place for him. I think a test with an experienced horseperson to determine if he would be good in a large herd would literally be a life changer for him. My friend has paid her board through January 20th 2015. I would like to have a place for him by then or I'm afraid his time is up. He deserves more- he still has a spark in his eyes and for being 28, he is in really good shape. His teeth were floated (no extractions) and he has been wormed. I think with an experienced owner he would make a good companion. Can you help or lead me to someone who can? I could help with his feed bill, if that makes any difference. (Less)

AAE took in this handsome TB gelding in November 2013 after relinquishment by his owner resulting from a financial distress situation. He loaded easily when we picked him up. He seems to be an absolute gentlemen and we were told he was an ol' trail horse. He was very thin and suffering from a respiratory infection/mild pneumonia. Smokey received a visit from Dr. Stolba, and he was placed on antibiotics while in quarantine. Smokey truly is a kind ol' soul, but he does have a few quirks that need exploring and work. Some days he meets you at the gate, other days, he'd rather be alone and plays hard to get. Those times are fewer and ... (Read More)farther between, but still a part of his day. Working in the round pen is not something he enjoys, and he didn't seem to have much understanding of anything but 'go'. However, he's made great progress. He readily accepted a bit/bridle, and he stood pretty quietly while saddling, with no resistance. However, as a leg went up and over to mount, he bolted. Radiographs of his withers area indicated an old fractured vertebrae with a piece of bone that migrated back a couple vertebra in his shoulder area. Based upon the location and saddle placement, a saddle is likely a source of substantial pain. As a result, Smokey will be best suited as a companion. He also has multiple melanomas under his tail, and a sarcoid in his inguinal area. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and hoof and dental care. Adoption fee subject to change based on training.     AAE took in this big, beautiful girl in November 2013 after relinquishment by her owner. Zara's relinquishment resulted from a financial distress situation. She was quite thin and neglected. We were told she was a pacer and after we shaved the tattoo on her neck and tracked down a bit of her racing history, we discovered she is about 11 years old. She was bred in Indiana, and raced as a pacer at Cal Expo. She loaded like a champ when we picked her up. Zara seems to be a gentle giant...not a draft, but a big, quiet, kind mare. Subsequent to intake, Zara kicked a panel. She fractured her splint bone and developed a seroma that was ... (Read More)draining. Due to ongoing draining (several weeks), AAE opted to surgically repair the crushed bone and seroma. After a long healing process followed by a large hoof abscess, Zara has become a super mare. She stood politely (without a halter) in her stall for bandage changes every 2-3 days (day after day after day), and she tolerated her stall rest like a champ. She had a major issue walking through gates/doors; however, that is nearly resolved. With her track experience (e.g. harness, bridle/bit, etc.), she should transition smoothly to a riding horse. She is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change based on training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

AAE took in this handsome guy in January 2014 after relinquishment after his owner developed health issues. He shared a (dry) pasture with another horse for 12 years, and he was very protective of his pasture-mate, to his detriment. He had a very sweet side, but he also tested his handler, and displayed some naughty stud-like behavior. He was fearful of ropes, and he challenged his handler when approached with a rope. Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Gelded, Vaccinations Current

Meet Magic. This sweet guy was brought into AAE on January 24, 2014. He and his companion were abandoned by their owner and were found by a family member (and prior owner) that reached out to AAE for assistance. Although Magic's weight did not appear horrible, the family stated he had several sores all over his body, including a ruptured hernia that had been untreated for at least three (3) years. During AAE's initial evaluation, there were three obviously neglected sores, including a thick, oozing growth on his ear (about the diameter of a quarter), a dangling and oozy growth on his abdomen under his flank (about the size and shape of a ... (Read More)big ginger root), and a painful looking growth on his sheath (about the size of a half-dollar). Upon vet exam, numerous additional growths were found under his skin in and around his flank, abdomen, and sheath areas. Blood was drawn and the growths were sampled for biopsy. Magic's blood results were generally good with everything within normal range other than being a bit anemic. Not unusual considering his condition. Magic's biopsy results indicated the growth on his sheath was a squamous cell carcinoma, and the others on his flank/abdominal areas and ear were sarcoids. The three worst lesions needed to be removed and treated with chemo to reduce the risk of recurrence. Once Magic had gained a little weight and settled in, about 16 growths were removed, including the tip of his ear. In general, Magic recovered very well from surgery, and he has rebounded from the scrawny, sickly boy he was. He's looking very healthy and feeling good. One sarcoid has recurred in his inguinal area, and he will undergo further treatment, soon. Magic has a ton of personality, and although he lacks confidence, he has a very willing spirit. He will make a very fun project horse for an experienced handler/rider/trainer. Additionally, Magic's person should know he may be prone to more sarcoids, and he/she should consider potential future treatment costs prior to adoption. He is current with vaccines, deworming, and dental and hoof care. Adoption fee subject to change due to training. Please refer to website for current information. (Less)

Horse    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Horses
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Intact (Needs to be Fixed), Fearful/Anxious

Goldwing's story is one of separation, detachment, and motherly love for a disabled child. As a broodmare for most of her life, she adored and cared for her children, as best as she could. The wonderful mother she is. People would them taken away from her, every time, leaving her with an emptiness and distain people in general. Over the last year, we worked through her anxieties, trained her to be ridden, something she loves; feeling that she has a purpose and reason to exist. When her daughter Godiva needed to be re-homed, we stepped in, and Goldwing's adopter also agreed to adopt Godiva. The joy of having these two souls reunited was ... (Read More)beautiful to watch and they are now inseparable. However, the emotional healing that I thought I would see in Goldwing's eyes turned to worry and concern... Godiva, had the potential to be had been top level dressage horse, but an unknown lameness issue appeared when she was only 3 years old. Retired, she stood in a field for almost 10 years. In 2012, when the person who originally adopted her realized that her rehabilitation would be more than she could handle, Goldwing's adopter, adopted Godiva for Goldwing. With a full vet check, including x-rays, ultrasounds, you name it, she was diagnosed with navicular in left front, and very slight ringbone in the right front. We immediately started our treatment plan and within 9 months was about 90% sound. However, her new owner, being so far away, was getting impatient on her recovery progress and costs involved, and she was receiving conflicting information from other 'experts' in her area. This information made her decide to stop our treatment plan and within 5 months, she regressed back to her original lameness, if not worse. These 'experts' who never had seen this horse in person, told the adopter to have Godiva put down since they thought she had a neurological problem. I told her I would not do that to her, or Goldwing. For the last few months, when we turn Goldwing and Godiva out together, Goldwing makes Godiva move, no matter how much pain Godiva is in, and will not let her out of her sight. She knows she is hurting, and is frantic when she can't see her in the stall next to her. She is screaming inside for someone to help her baby out of this pain. Since the treatment plan is very expensive, we have been unable to do this for her on our own. We possibly have an alternative remedy for her, which is not quite as expensive, but ideally, our past treatment and the new homeopathies should be combined for a complete recovery, which could take as long as 4 years. The body will take the time it needs to heal and only the universe knows how long that is. For the past week we have had her on bute and she is moving well again, though this is just to get her past her immediate discomfort. Bute does not work on neurological issues so we know for a fact that we are dealing with sore feet.(Navicular) I made Goldwing and Godiva a soul contract that they would never again be apart, and I will keep that promise. We are ultimately looking for someone who will feel their story, and not 'use' them. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Horse in California
Horses can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Horses are beautiful, romantic animals that many people love. Sadly, however, horses are being neglected, abused, and abandoned at an alarming rate. The reasons a horse would need to be rescued are quite varied. Some horse owners in the Western U.S. have lost their homes and land to foreclosure, leaving nowhere for their horses to go. These horses are sometimes abandoned in the plains and deserts, where they often die of slow exposure. Droughts, rising food and fuel prices, and other economic pressures mean that some owners can no longer afford to feed and care for their horses. Other horses are purchased by inexperienced people for sentimental reasons or as gifts for children, but their owners are unprepared for the ongoing expense and involvement of caring for the horses.

Like horses, donkeys and mules (sterile hybrids of a horse and a donkey) have their own charm and usefulness. However, these animals have also been affected by hay shortages and some have sadly become victims of abuse or neglect.
